    A narcotic is a class of medication prescribed by a health care professional for the treatment of pain.
    They commonly include Opium and its derivatives Morphine and Heroin, Codeine, Demerol, and less commonly Stadol. Even though Cocaine does not chemically belong to the scientific class of Narcotics it is still broadly classified as a narcotic.

    Narcotics are highly addictive medications because they stimulate the nervous system leading to a feeling of euphoria in people addicted to whatever drug they are taking.

    Symptoms associated with taking narcotics include:

    * Drowsiness
    * Decreased anxiety and tension
    * The inability to concentrate

    Treatment for a narcotics addiction is complicated, and depends upon how long the person has been addicted, and the narcotic involved. Typical treatment usually involves:

    * Enrollment in a drug rehabilitation and detoxification program such as Narcotics Anonymous
    * The use of Methadone to decrease withdrawal symptoms
    * Use of another drug called Naltrexone to help control cravings

    Methdone Withdraw              Reply to this Comment
    I would like to know how to reduce the amount of methdone to get the lowest amount of withdrawal pains. I am on 10mg twice a day for neurophy pain in my feet and hands.My docter is not familer with meth. so he wants me to use a new drug called Lyrica 100mg 3 times a day instead. I need help, I've been on the methdone 3 years. Thanks very much

    Methadone/Lyrica              Reply to this Comment
    Lyrica has no action at opiate receptors, and so will be of no use for avoiding methadone withdrawal. Methadone withdrawal is miserable, but not fatal. The key is to reduce your dose slowly, say 10% every month. Use clonidine to reduce the withdrawal symptoms. Lyrica can reduce neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia pain, and can be used during the taper to treat your neuropathy. But whether or not you take lyrica has nothing to do with how to reduce the methadone. A great alternative to methadone is Suboxone-- less sedation, no cravings, dose once per day... Google me, find my Suboxone web sites, and read about it.
