    An addiction to prescription drugs is more prevalent in women than in men.
    However, the highest group of people who become addicted to prescription drugs are elderly females. The drugs that are most often abused include OxyContin, Vicodin, and the Opioids such as Morphine, which are used to treat pain. However, any prescription drug that has an effect on the nervous system can be abused.

    There has been an increase seen in addictions to prescription drugs, because it is now possible to buy medication online, sometimes without a prescription. Health care professionals such as doctors and pharmacists should pay attention to addicts who go through their amount of pills faster than normal.

    Symptoms associated with abusing prescription drugs include:

    * Difficulty sleeping
    * A restless feeling
    * Decreased breathing

    Often people addicted to prescription drugs can be treated in a manner of different ways:

    * Counseling
    * Use of Methadone to control withdrawal symptoms
    * Prescribing Naltrexone, especially in the case of Opioids, to help reduce cravings and counteract the effect of the abused drug.

    I am currently in a relationship w/a person that is useing many differnt perscription drugs. He has been to rehab several times over the past two years, and he just seems to get worse every time he gets out, he has started being abusive to me physically & verbally and also talking about killing himself. He is aware that he needs help and willing to get it, but cannot afford the help that he needs.We have a infant son together,I really need some advice.

    It's not that he's using rx drugs its just that he's abusing them. Maybe you can contact one of the doctors that is prescribing these drugs and tell him/her what's going on. Is there a reason he's using prescription drugs - like chronic pain? Sounds like he should be under the care of a psychiatrist, is he? I'm sure if he can afford the doctors giving him the drugs he can afford a shrink. Maybe you can suggest couples therapy. Then you tell the therapist what's going on. Chances are you will be told to kick him out and change locks.

    I have on Oxy for over 10 years along with a barrage of other meds since I got hurt in 1997, now my doctors who made me an "addict" are telling me I have to go to New Start because the meds cause more pain than they help?! Can this be true? Your man has gone through this HOW MANY TIMES? Is there hope? If I am in pain all the time, then why can't I have my pain meds??? I am afraid and live alone. If anyone out there will talk, it would be wonderful I'm pretty scared of what will be happening on July 3rd when I go in. Please write to me at mickibeau@yahoo.com Peace, Michelle
