Painkillers are drugs that are taken to relieve pain by acting on the nervous system.
There are many common painkillers available such as Tylenol or Advil, however the painkillers such as Tylenol 2, Tylenol 3, Fiorinal, and Percodan are the most common painkillers that people become addicted to.

Some people who are addicted to painkillers usually have built up tolerance to the effects of the drug. Therefore, they will need higher doses to receive pain relief.

However, tolerance to a drug does not equal addiction.

The most common symptoms associated with a painkiller addiction consists of:

    * Feeling tense and anxious if the prescription runs out.
    * Taking more pills than necessary
    * Going to many different doctors to get the same prescription

The treatment that is available for people addicted to painkillers include:

    * Psychotherapy to modify the behavior
    * Enrollment in a detoxification program
    * Methadone to decrease the symptoms of withdrawal
