A sexual addiction occurs when someone repeatedly engages in sexual activities without being able to control themselves.
Usually sexual addiction starts with just repetitive behavior such
as watching pornography or excessive masturbation. From this the
person's behavior becomes excessively repetitive, and they are left
feeling as if they have no control over their body. Not only does the
behavior affect the person's self esteem, but sexual addiction also
results in problems between the addict and their family and friends.
The symptoms that are associated with sexual addiction are numerous. However, the most common ones are:
* Feeling a lack of control about their sexual behavior
* Repeatedly thinking and obsessing about sexual activities
* Feelings of shame associated with the repeated acts
Treatment for sexual addition usually involves:
* Enrollment in twelve step program such as Sexual Addicts Anonymous
* Self-help group counseling that provides support
* Psychotherapy geared towards the individual
