    Someone might think it was humorous to hear of someone having an addiction to shopping.
     However, unless the person is a multimillionaire, an addiction to shopping can present a serious threat to someone's financial security. This addiction is also referred to as 'Compulsive Shopping'.

    Like most addictions that are pleasure seeking, the shopping addict feels better after they have purchased new items.

    The items that the person buys, is not needed, but the addict develops pleasure in making the purchases anyway. The purchases will then sit unused in closets or basements. Some people who are compulsive shoppers also have other addictions as well.

    The symptoms associated with an addiction to shopping include:

    * Purchasing large quantities of items that are not needed
    * Fantasies surrounding purchasing the item
    * Using the shopping spree as a way to escape reality

    The treatment of a shopping addiction consists of:

    * Enrollment in rehabilitative programs such as Debtors Anonymous
    * Individual Psychotherapy
    * Medication such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSR

    i suffered and still suffer from shopping addiction. at this point i am now bankrupt even though i made good money. it is a daily struggle that i have to live with. had i not had this affliction, i would have a decent house with a small mortgage as well as a substantial amount of money in a retirement account.

    My boyfriend whom I live with and share an account with is pissed because he says I spend too much money on clothes, shoes, beauty products, etc. After one of my shopping sprees, he gets mad at me and won't talk to me for days. He says I'm selfish and have a disease. He is extremely frugal and doesn't spend any money, therefore, on the other end of the sprectrum. I want to look good and feel good about the way I present myself. I love fashion! I do feel that I spend outside of my means, but I just want to have what other girls have. If it were up to my boyfriend, I would get something new like every 6 months. SUCKS! I find myself hiding purchases from him :) and feeling extreme guilt for the things I buy for myself. I know this is probably rationalization, but damnit I work hard for my money, why can't I buy myself things? I spend about $200-$300 a month on stuff. Is this too much?

    this all began, quite serious really, from the great sale at selfridges, here in birmingham uk, i was picking up £220 dress for just £19, and pierre de terre leather boots for just £20 and £30 from a huge £275 and £130, ok i also got some Victoria Beckham white rock and republic jeans £285 that was lavish of me, but i thought about it for months, then thought if i see them in my small size, 25, or24, i am having them. plus a juicy couture bag £158, plus shoes gucci £175 from £295, see how i feel i think i am spirralling out of control, i dont know if i do havea problem at least i am aware of it my mum picked it up first and this made me upset, and hurt i guess.my husband is worried too, i think its cos i have a disabled litte boy and toddler, and i love to have as much perfection for themand me as possible, that may mean quality labels. i hatecheap products and hate faux

    I am the other person that is in the line to be let down by my spouses trouble with spending. It is everyday, and the internet makes it every minute. A hateful discussion arises if anything is said. There is little room to walk, sit or eat or make bills out in our home and it is all closing in everyday. " I have had this for ever, sister gave it to me, our finds aren't charging me for this, they made another mistake with my account, you have to help, I will never do it again". Just some of what you hear daily, it takes its cycle then another loan has to cover, another savings account sucked up, the cd has secured loan after loan, we will never share that. Betrayed, another vacation, another Christmas, Birthday, mothers birthday, fathers day, gobbled up for another pair of shoes, jewelery, clothes, all that are worn once and then put aside and under the pile. It feels like a direct hit, get out or stay in, threat, scream, nothing matters, nothing helps, no where to turn. Some people think it is cute, funny, just understand very little, do not see the long term doing with out myself, clothes, self estem, hair care, shoes, maybe a pair every couple of years when I wear out a pair. live with it or get out, seek help educate, but don't look forward, going forward is taken away, you just stay where you are at always taking care of the problem, always reoccuring. A lot of hurt, but being addicted maybe it is not meant to hurt, deceived again, it does hurt. Lucy Three months childish behavior, 20 years an addiction.

    Shopping is killing everything              Reply to this Comment
    I wanted to response to your blog because it's horrible to be a closet shopper. Every waking minute, I'm thinking about the next sale, or what I need (really want). I've not cursed with Bankrupcy, thank GOD. But have been fired for shopping on the job in a few positions. I married about two years ago. My husband makes good money, I'm still barely getting by, but still spend outside my means. I hide my purchases, my husband and I argue about it, I lie about them. I don't if I'm trying to make my self sound like I have a reason behind this craziness but I had nothing before, barely an apartment and now that we have two incomes it's like free money. No needs/only wants without limitations. I've killed most of my friends away, by taking shopping over them, I'm pushing my husband away and am sure I've taught my teen daughter to find nothing by shopping as an interest. I'm ready to die. I love my family, I'm just unhappy with everything. hope the truth helps your paper, because I'm to ashamed to admit any of this to anyone that knows me. Please pray for the unhappy people that look to drugs, alocholism, shopping, eating or whatever.

    I know that it sounds easier than it will be. Try to find another hobby than being online. give your credit cards to your parents and walk away, only allow yourself the cash that you have in hand. Give yourself limitations. I'm a hipercrit to talk. I'm a complusive shopper as well. Your story makes your sound very young. Please know that there's lots of life ahead of you. Stop now, before you hurt more people!!! Please... Take it from me. Laurie
