    Someone might think it was humorous to hear of someone having an addiction to shopping.
     However, unless the person is a multimillionaire, an addiction to shopping can present a serious threat to someone's financial security. This addiction is also referred to as 'Compulsive Shopping'.

    Like most addictions that are pleasure seeking, the shopping addict feels better after they have purchased new items.

    The items that the person buys, is not needed, but the addict develops pleasure in making the purchases anyway. The purchases will then sit unused in closets or basements. Some people who are compulsive shoppers also have other addictions as well.

    The symptoms associated with an addiction to shopping include:

    * Purchasing large quantities of items that are not needed
    * Fantasies surrounding purchasing the item
    * Using the shopping spree as a way to escape reality

    The treatment of a shopping addiction consists of:

    * Enrollment in rehabilitative programs such as Debtors Anonymous
    * Individual Psychotherapy
    * Medication such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSR

    Well just yesterday my boyfriend saw the credit cards I had ran up and today i woke up and realized what I had done, while I was shopping constantly I felt good for the moment and then guilt followed that and now my boyfriend is seriously upset with me and wont speak or even look at me, we live together and have a baby together and I will be lucky if this didnt ruin my life, it consumes your every thought and you escape reality thinking nothing about the consequences, its horrible now and I am currently looking for a therapist so any suggestions are greatly appreciated

    I have heard and seen many shows about women who are addicted to shopping. I really think that I am. What causes a person to acquire this addiction? I always buy clothes and shoes even though I do not need them. I always find an excuse or reason for buying stuff. Like I bought a pair of shoes so of course I need the dress to match. This is causing me great financial problems. I am so bad that I will put off paying bills to shop. I need help so where do I go?

    My name is Sarah Wexler, and I'm an editor at Marie Claire magazine. We are working on a package about addictions, on how the economy has made so many of us edgy, anxious, depressed and frightened about the future--the kind of feelings that make us vulnerable to addiction. We'd like to hightlight a woman in her 20s-30s who has a spending problem/addiction who can speak about the effects of her shopping on her career or her family/relationships. Also about how this period of uncertainty has, perhaps, heightened her anxieties. We can change her name to protect her identity. If you know of someone who may fit the bill and is interested in sharing her story, I'd love to talk to her. Please pass along my information. Thank you. 212-841-8442 swexler@hearst.com

    Dear fellow compulsive shoppers, My name is Joseph and I am producing a new documentary film aimed to raise awareness of compulsive shopping and shopoholism in America. Both I and the film's director are recovering compulsive shoppers. I know the feeling of having an uncontrollable urge to shop and consume to fill something within, but only to be left with an emptiness at the end of the day. We seek to bring to light both the psychological and cultural forces that have brought about our epidemic of compulsive shopping. What is it that drives us to fill our lives with "things?" We are searching for someone who would feel comfortable in front of a camera, and would like to share with us the motivations behind their shopping. If you would like to raise awareness of the issue by sharing your story in our film, we would love it if you could send us some information about yourself - your name, age & general area of residence, as well as some insight into your situation. How does compulsive shopping affect your day-to-day life? Are you stuck in a cycle of shopping to make yourself feel better? Does compulsive shopping hold your life back through debt, or other financial obstacles? Has the ritual of shopping replaced other, more productive or personally beneficial activities you may have previously participated in? Please just let me know if you feel you may want to participate. Thank you so much and best of luck! Joseph Ferrera josephferrera1@gmail.com
