    Hypersomnia or excessive sleeping is a sleep disorder that is usually prevalent in children and young adults, usually appearing before the mid 20's.
    It involves periods of deep or prolonged sleep, with feeling excessively sleepy during the daytime.

    Not quite an addiction, but there are conditions that do exist in which the person constantly sleeps. Hypersomnia is sometimes a symptom of an underlying medical condition, and is a signal that a greater physical or psychological problem is happening in the body.

    For example, Hypersomnia is a symptom that can be associated major clinical depression. Hypersomnia has also been shown to result from injury to the central nervous system or having a history of a viral infection.

    Symptoms associated with Hypersomnia are:

    * Excessive sleeping usually more than ten to twelve hours at night
    * Excessive daytime sleepiness
    * Occasional Headaches

    The treatment for excessive sleeping involves:

    * Education and support to help the person stay awake
    * Behavioral changes such as decreasing daytime napping
    * Stimulant medication such as Modafinil to keep the person awake

    Sleeping pills can be addicting and dangerous.

    excessive sleepiness              Reply to this Comment
    I am 47 and female and seemingly could sleep 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I had mono when i was 39 and have never been the same. I do also suffer from bouts of depression and take meds for that. even when i'm "up" I can never seem to get away from sleeping. I have very little motivation although I want to do things. Could this been a result of mono? also would drug, Modafinil, be a possible treatment to try? I'm tired of being tired.

    I actually think I'm addicted to the feeling of being tired when its aided by a pill or not, I unconsciously fight the feeling resulting in a drunken like state. I find myself fighting sleep until I can't go to sleep at all and work without sleep, then sleep for days, then go without sleep for days. This has been a cycle for me since I was about 13 years old, I'm now 26.

    Whenever I'm having a bad day or something I just go for the sleeping pills. Falling asleep for long periods of time somehow helps me feel better and think that everything will go away but it doesn't and its a cycle that keeps going on and on...
