    Sleeping pills are medications prescribed to help someone fall asleep.
    The most common sleeping pills are Xanax, Ativan, Restoril, and Ambien.   The medication is taken by swallowing the amount of pills prescribed by the doctor.

    Sleeping pills consist of a group of medication associated with tranquilizers that depress the nervous system, leading to decrease heart and breathing rate.

    The resulting drowsiness that accompanies taking the pills helps the user to fall asleep.  As a result, it is this is an extremely serious addiction to develop because of their ability to act on the nervous system and cause sleep and drowsiness.

    At increasing doses or when mixed with alcohol, the central nervous system functions can become depressed resulting in coma or death.

     The common symptoms associated with ingesting sleeping pills are:

    * Drowsiness and sleepiness
    * A relaxed feeling
    * Reduced anxiety and tension

    The treatment involved with someone addicted to sleeping pills should be customized for each individual. Generalyl treatment involves:

    * Enrolling in a drug rehabilitation or detoxification program
    * Drug Abstinence
    * Behavioral Therapy

    ZSomething I wrote myself. I have concious anxiousness and I'm jittery. When I'm upset or have an especially bad day, I run to take a sleeping pill to help me relax, ofyen times fighting sleep until I can literally no longer keep my eyes open. I was thinking that my anxiety was related to a major surgery and complications a couple years ago, but I'm starting to think my constant use of sleeping pills is what is causing these effects. I began getting sleep aids in the hospital because of the difficultly sleeping and my emotions over the whole situation and loved the way they made me feel. Since then, I've tried almost every over the counter drug imaginable, taking them even in the middle of the day to help me relax. I had no idea this was a real addiction, what everyone here is describing is...me. I stopped taking them for a while after promising my fiancee I'd stop taking tylenol PM and was doing well, until I had my wisdom teeth removed and the Dr, gave me percocet. Once again, I was addicted to the sleepy feeling. It wasn't until a fight with my fiancee last night I actually decided to look into it. I cannot believe the mess I got myself into, and I don't know where to start overcoming it.

    Ambien              Reply to this Comment
    It is 2am. After tossing and turning for two hours, I got up and took an Ambien. Now I am chasing it with a small glass of chilled rose. I feel the drowsey coming on. I really don't see a problem here. I need to sleep and Ambien will tuck me in, read me a story and give me the cool brush of lips on the forehead.I have tried all the holistic crap - warm milk, baths, aromatherapy, regular bed time, no caffeiene, whatever. Natural appears too gentle. I need the firm, gentle hand of Ambien to put me down.

    I've been taking advilPM as an escape for about a year. I can't stop.. I keep them in my purse and pop them at school. I need help. My parents won't take me back to the psychologist.

    Sleeping Pill Addiction              Reply to this Comment
    I have taken sleeping pill since high school. I am now 40. It started with Tylenol PM in high school, then Elavil in college, then Ambien and Lunesta. All of them have ruined my memory and job prospects because I can't remember anything now. Please teach your children to never start taking these awful pills. I have went to countless doctors and they just write me scripts and never propose a solution. I wish there was a way out of this mess.

    Sorry to hear about your mom. she will only get worse and worse if she keeps taking the pills. and especially with alcohol. The problem is that the withrawl from benzo pills can take a long time up to 1 year +. And her mental state could get much worse for a while during withrawl. If she is willing to go thorugh the withrawl, tapering can make the symptoms less, she will need your support for about a year or 2 as she comes off them. maybe less. but she will need support as it is very difficult and will be draining for you as you will both think that the withrawl seems like a constant state of mental illness. but eventually you will get you mum back , she may even thank you for it. but it will take time. read the ashton manual for tapering advice.

    I used to be addicted to xanex and over the counter sleeping pills. I have taken a total of 7 xanex and 7 unisom, I didnt die, but was lucky. It is very hard to break the cycle. You will have many many sleepless nights and will begin having very vivid dreams. It will be a good month before you sleep good and normal again. You HAVE TO DECIDE THAT YOU WANT TO QUIT AND CAN DO IT. You have to have a support system and be completely honest with at least one person.

    Why is it so easy to get these deadly drugs.              Reply to this Comment
    My sister has been hooked on Xanax for who knows how long. She never has a problem getting the prescriptions filled as the Drs casually prescribed them without even getting a patients pass medical history check. My sis who I love dearly has lost relationship with children, husband and now family. She She is in denial, and will not admit to a problem. Has driven everyone that cares and love her away. 3 times attempted suicide, has been baker act twice. Is there anyone out there that cares about people like this enought to help. We are at the end of our rope.
