    Anyone addicted to sniffing solvents is severely endangering their lives.
    Sniffing solvents is the process in which an addict inhales the fumes of a chemical substance in order to receive a pleasurable feeling. This pleasurable feeling is called a 'high' and is similar to the 'high' experienced when smoking Marijuana or taking narcotics.

    The list of solvents that addicts use to obtain this 'high' varies considerably, but the most popular chemicals consist of glue, gasoline, butane gas, aerosol sprays, bathroom cleaners, and paint thinner.

    An addiction to solvent sniffing is most prevalent in teenagers and young adults. They are introduced to solvent sniffing by friends, who tell them that solvent sniffing is 'fun'. Let untreated, the person is at risk of dying from Sudden Sniffing Death.

    There are numerous symptoms associated with sniffing solvents:

    * Initial high and feeling extremely drowsy after the 'high' has worn off
    * Blurred vision
    * Decreased breathing rate

    The success of the treatment methods available depends upon the addict's compliance. Generally treatment consists of:

    * Abstaining from the solvents
    * Psychotherapy
    * Enrollment in a drug rehabilitation program

    My brother who was 19 only a few weeks ago also passed away from sniffing/inhaling butane gas...my family are devasted at this sudden tragedy. He was found in his room the next morning by my father. I hear more & more young people doing it and dying...it's not fair!!

    Carls funeral was last Thursday, he died just like Rachel Edwards's bro. He turned 19 two days after he died. He didn't fit in at school but 400 turned up to his funeral, it's funny how many more people love you than you think. Carl told me that he didn't want to die b'cos he had so much to do, but butane had other plans. I really miss you dude! Rachel, I'm really sad for your loss.

    Loss of a loved one is aweful. You all should regularly check this site...maybe there will be a person in need of help, and you can give them advice and feedback so that maybe they will have a chance of living. I check this site all the time- it can make a difference!

    Broken Heart              Reply to this Comment
    Rachel,my heart goes out to you. My daughter is a 26yr old inhalant abuser. I suspect she has done it from as early as 8-10 yrs old. I can remember when she was around 12 and I noticed her breath smelled of chemicals ( I knew nothing of inhalant abuse}I made an appt w/ her pediatrician telling him her breath reeked of nail polish remover, he said she was healthy and he could find nothing wrong. She has had several unexplained accidents. She had gastric bypass in 2002, she had a pulmonary embolism, the doctor kept hasking was she a substance abuser, still not aware I told him NO WAY! she was hospitalized for almost 2 months. She finally ended up pregnant and moved back home.the house smelled constantly of magic markers. Her brother argued with her about it. He finally tole me Mommy your daughter is a huffer. She denied it, but at that point I still wanted to trust her. Well, she had the baby abd she breast fed her daughter. My sister noticed everytime she nursed he baby, the baby eyes rolled back in her head. She mentioned it to my daughter and she immediately stopped nursing her. In 2003 I lost both my parents in less than 3 months a part. A few months later I found a bag filled with dirt that had markers, cement glue and the markers had been removed from the metal casing and the metal tube had burns on it(maybe converted into a crack pipe????} I confronted her and she denied it, told everyone I was nuts. She volunteered to take a MRI of her brain. The nurologist said it was ok. So she feel she won that round. For the second time recently she was hospitalized and had to be given 5 units of blood. She looks like a zombie. Her friend recently found a receipt for canned air. I just wait for that call telling me my only daughter has died. Thank You all for letting me tell you about this. It weighs heavily on my heart.

    HI, I have a thirteen year old daughter who I think is sniffing butane. I do know that she was huffing gas and I caught her.....needless to say I think she found something else. I don't know what to do for her or even why she is doing this....any suggestions?

    Jinx              Reply to this Comment
    Hi Jinx, Sorry to hear you are going through this with your daughter. It can seem like you're the only parent going through this, just know we are fortunate in the sense that we know our daughters are doing this. You have a chance to help your daughter. I would suggest having an MRI (brain) done to set a baseline for any damage being done. I would also suggest getting her into treatment since she is still a minor.I spoke to someone at a hotline and they suggested I take my daughter to the nearest psychiatric hospital. I can see the neurological damage it has done to my daughter. My parents best frinds had a son that was huffing gas at 13 yrs old.....he now lives in a group home and cannot complete a full sentence. I will pray for you and your daughter. There are few places online where people will talk about huffing. Keep in touch, let me know how your daughter is doing.

    My bf was just taken to a center for sniffing gas. They think he's depressed. I cried so much. I really hope this helps him. I just wish I could do something to help too. And his b-day's coming up so I hope he does good so he can be back for that. His family won't tell me anything... I just wanna know how long he's going to be there at least. I love him and miss him so much! Plus I'm a cutter so last night I did because of that and everything else going on. I don't know what to do.

    The first time I tried huffng acetone, it was pure pleasure. I know it's bad for me, but secretly I am hoping I was die from it. I just don't care enough. But if there is anyone out there that DOES care if they might die from doing so, please wait until your old and responsible enough to buy alchohol or something, huffing is stupid. Altough it does substitute nicey. you can die from it upon doing it once! stay away.

    TWO DAYS AGO I CAUGHT MY 12 YR OLD SON HUFFING GAS.. I WAS SO SCARED I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO, HE WAS RIPPED OUT OF HIS MIND, HE HAD NO CLUE WHAT HE WAS DOING, TALKING TO HIMSELF ABOUT CRAZY STUFF AND HIS EYES WERE BLOOD RED. IVE NEVER BEEN SO SCARED IN MY LIFE. I CALLED THE HOSPITAL AND ASK IF I NEEDED TO BRING HIM IN OR WHAT AND THEY TOLD ME THAT ANY EFFECTS IT HAD ON HIM WOULD BE OVER BEFORE I COULD GET HIM THERE. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT 1 HUFF COULD KILL YOU AND THAT I NEEDED TO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY, I HAD TO WATCH MY SON ALLLL NIGHT TO MAKE SURE HE COULD BREATHE ON HIS OWN DUE TO THE SIDE EFFECTS, I THINK THIS MAY HAVE REALLY SCARED HIM, HE THOUGHT IF HE WENT TO SLEEP HE WOULDNT WAKE UP! I DONT KNOW BUT TO ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS A CHILD DOING THIS OR YOU MAY SUSPECT IT, GET THEM HELP NOWWWWWWWWWW! I CALLED THAT NIGHT TO GET HIM IN SOMEWHERE, THEY HAVE TO FIRST DO AN ASSESSMENT THEN WILL TELL ME IF HE NEEDS INPATIENT OR OUT PATIENT TREATMENT... IM BEGGING, WETHER YOUR CHILD SAYS THEYVE ONLY DONE IT ONCE OR TWO OR THREE TIMES, GET THEM HELP... WE AS PARENTS HAVE TO PUT A STOP TO THIS OR OUR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO DIE!!!!

    DID YOU ALSO KNOW THAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOUR CHILD OTHER THAN DEATH WHILE HUFFING THERE IS NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO TO SAVE THEIR LIFE??? THINK ABOUT IT
