I told myself that if my drinking affected my ability to take care of my family, or my obligations as a husband, father, or my ability to make it in to work. I would stop drinking. No matter how hung over or tired I was I would make it in to work . I felt I was taking care of my family.
To keep drinking I even declared to my fellow drinking buddies that I am a functioning alcoholic not realizing there is no such thing, I became a person who believed as long I was working and buying my family gifts I do not have a problem. I've been in denial for 26 years! I now find myself unemployed feeling very tired and depressed. My wife has left me because I get to drunk and don't come home .any money I make is spend on drinking. My days our spent sleeping because I am to sick and tired to get up.
I don't have any medical insurance I need help ready to take action and heal my family relationships.

Book Title: A Childhood Taken Away by a Mother and Grandfather
Author: Linda Sommer Farley
ISBN: 1413775195 Publisher: Publish America
Book Description
One of the most beautiful aspects of life is the relationship and love between a mother and child. To go through life without a mother's love can be very cruel and difficult. It can easily destroy you or as in my case make you stronger. With determination you can have a wonderful life after experiencing a tough childhood. After fifty-three years of dealing with someone who was incapable of showing me any respect or love, I can say that I have finally broken free from my mother's bondage. After all of these years I can finally be the person who I want to be. It is as if I have just now begun to live. I will continue to write about my experiences as a child; hopefully, what I have been through will help others. I now know that a new beginning is possible no matter what life throws your way.
Farley was born in Springfield, Illinois. She grew up in a large family where money was scarce. Her mother was not around for a great deal of her childhood. She was the sixth child of eight and had the responsibility of raising her younger siblings when no one was at home. An abusive grandfather and mother were traumatic parts of her life. This book contains some of Farley's life stories. She describes the difficulties and accomplishments she has experienced in these painful and some times humorous stories. She wrote this book with the purest of intentions - to help others.

questionReply to this Comment
I have a question. I have a girl-friend that does not drink all the time, but when she does drink ... she does not know when to stop. This problem is an ongoing issue with our relationship ... She believes that she doesn't have a problem, while I insist she does. The question that I'm asking is if she is infact an alcoholic.

Alcohol problemsReply to this Comment
Alcohol became a larger part of my life than I ever intended. I went to Alcoholics Anonymous, and have been sober for 14 months. It works...maybe other ways do, too...but I KNOW that AA WORKS! Give it a try, and have a Merry Christmas! David

My aunt is an alcoholic and her problem has gotten so bad that she is often depressed and tried committing suicide the other day. She has absolutely no money, and just got kicked out of her house. How do I get help for her?
The Victim of AlcoholReply to this Comment
First, the article was very good and to the point. What I have a hard time understanding is what the loved one - the one who suffers from his or her alcoholic spouse or friend - does after the alcoholic goes through detox and counseling. In essence, how should we relate to our alcoholic loved one? There seems to be many books on the alcoholism and little, to my limited knowledge, for the victim who chooses not to lose his or her loved one.
Not having ever been through this, and at 60, this is somewhat hard to discover.

A major problemReply to this Comment
I think Alcohol is a major problem in society. A problem that continues to get worse everyday. It's affecting the children, teenagers, and adults throughout society. I think America as a whole should come up with some possible solutions to help stop this problem. Before it continues to get worse.
Underage DrinkingReply to this Comment
Alcohol is not only a problem for adults, it's also a problem for America's children. We have children drinking alcoholic beverages as young as age eight. Alcohol manufactures are making products that look and taste like juice and lemonade. We have young people dying or being seriously injured because of alcohol related auto accidents. We need to be proactive as we look forward to prom & graduation season. Let's talk to our children about the dangers of alcohol. Also it's not OK to let your underage children consume alcohol at home, believing that it's safer for them. What they do at home they may also do away from home. Don't think that your child won't use alcohol. They are faced with a lot of peer pressure, pressure for parents, pressure to perform whether it is in academics, sports, & socially. Another place you can help is by looking at the laws in your state that help to combat underage drinking such as Keg Registration and others. Let's help our children get a good and healthy start into adulthood by making them aware of the dangers of underage drinking.
