    Too tired to get up

I told myself that if  my drinking affected my ability to take care of my family, or my obligations as a husband, father, or my ability to make it in to work. I would stop drinking. No matter how hung over or tired I was I would make it in to work . I felt I was taking care of my family.

To keep drinking I even declared to my  fellow drinking buddies that I am a functioning alcoholic not realizing there is no such thing, I became a person who believed as long I was working and buying my family gifts I do not have a problem. I've been in denial for 26 years! I now find myself unemployed feeling very tired and depressed. My wife has left me because I get to drunk and don't come home .any money I make is spend on drinking. My days our spent sleeping because I am to sick and tired to get up.
I don't have any medical insurance I need help ready to take action and heal my family relationships.

Early A.A. Spiritual Roots and Successes              Reply to this Comment
WE have devoted 16 years of research to finding, analyzing, publishing and disseminating the facts about the early A.A. Christian Fellowship and Bible emphasis in Akron A.A. of the 1930's and underlined its 75% to 93% success rate for people awash in the "any god" talk today in recovery groups and meetings

you are wrong              Reply to this Comment
Underage drinking is not a problem. Overconsumption is. Drinking is a perfectly normal, natural thing to do and is accepted a lot better in most other cultures than ours. Parents need to educate kids on how to properly drink so they dont go out and find out for themselves. Alcohol causes hundreds of thousands of deaths in America each year. A safer alternative? Marijuana. www.NORML.org for more information on that because it is true whether you want to believe it or not. By the way, alcohol companies do make amazingly flavored liquors because people enjoy drinking.

Brother with anxiety problem, also alcoholic              Reply to this Comment
I have a brother who has been an alcoholic for many years now. He has sought treatment in 5 or 6 treatment centers within the past 2 years, the last one being an inpatient facility lasting a total of 61 days. Within one week of being discharged from this program, he relapsed. (they did not offer anything in the way of aftercare, which was/is really a pity). My brother also suffers from severe anxiety disorder, but no professional has ever addressed this issue. It seems that once he tells them that he is an alcoholic, they become hesitant to prescribe any anti-anxiety medication, presuming that he will become addicted. Such is NOT the case, as I have many times shared my anti-exiety meds with him, and he never abused them; he took them only when REALLY necessary. I am super impressed with your article about alcoholics also having anxiety disorder, and their chances for relapse after treatment, as well as their becoming problem drinkers to calm their nerves, or to relieve their stress!! To me, it seems a vicious cycle. Why aren't more professionals aware of this sometimes co-existence of the 2 disorders? It would seem to me that if they were, then alcoholic treatment would be all the more effective; at least the individual would have a much better chance at coping with alcoholic urges, due to anxiety or stress....therefore, more prone to relapsing. It makes perfect sense to me. What can be done to get more of this information out to treatment professionals, thereby increasing a better success rate for treatment?? Any input will be most appreciated!!! THANKS!

I have an Alchohol drinking problem              Reply to this Comment
Hi - I just typed a whole msg before however it didn't send and I lost it all.. Its taken time to get here and I will admit I am a bit fearful of the changes in my life in the very near future... Changes that have to be made... I have been aware that I have had a drinking problem for a while now... Denial and enjoyment has kept my thoughts and/or actions with regard to AA at bay... I live with a man who is also an alchoholic, however doesn't consider beer drinkers to be alchoholics... its only spirit drinkers that are... I do not know for sure if either myself or both of us are alchohol abusers or alchoholics - I do know though that I need to address my current issues with alchohol... before it kills me... one way or another... I have Hep c and so therefore should be drinking responsibly if at all... Haven't had a liver biopsy for five years now and I've been drinking increasingly more and more often since then... So, I really do not know how my liver is - which to be truthful, does concern me a little bit... One would think it would concern me a lot... I look at life as the journey - and I have figured well my journey includes a drink or two which I do enjoy... However, I am binge drinking as well as drinking hideous quantities everyday of beer... Once or twice I can limit my beers to three... but that isn't often... I don't always get drunk when I drink, however that has increased... I read on one of your sites that drinking will not get better if its out of control it will only get worse... I am opening my eyes to see in my case at this point in time that is exactly true... I need some help, I need some support.... and I'm scared.... not sure of what... change in lifestyle, pain.... becoming too serious.... dunno....

cold turkey              Reply to this Comment
i wanna quit drinking cold turkey without going to a rehab i was wanting to know what some opinions on that are

Cold Turkey              Reply to this Comment
You can quit cold turkey, but you need a support group to help you through this. Go to every AA meeting you can get to. Get a sponsor at the meeting that can help you when you feel like you "just can't hang in there". Most importantly, work the program! The 12 step program is an awesome, but you've got to work the program. Good luck and may God bless you in your recovery!

Just say no              Reply to this Comment
AA and it's 'powerlessness' and relying on a spiritual experience are not for everybody. Try unhooked dot com or one of the others. You're not a freak if you get sober without AA. You're just sober. Best of luck. (sober 6 years without AA)

reply to a fearful teen              Reply to this Comment
I know the feeling, sweetheart. I worry a lot that one day I will end up like my mother, but I have to tell myself that I am stronger than her and her experience will help me not to. I believe satan wants us to believe that we will be just like them, but we have to put our faith n God and pray a lot. As for your party, I am so sorry you have to worry about stuff like. It's not fair, but hey, life is not meant to be fair and there are worst things, right. We just have to play the hand that is dealt us right now, love or family and pray A LOT!!! Is not having alcohol at your party an option? Good luck

    Resolution              Reply to this Comment
I have an alcohol dependency for the past 20 years. It was a way of life for me and my collegies as I am a psychologist. I have identified a persistant daily use as a cause for my conecern. I have gone through "in house detoxificaton`" but am still experiecing periods of insomnia. I am concerned that I will turn to alcohol as a way to resolve this. I have gone to AA meetings but they have been very depresssing, relating to how much everyone has ruined their lives. I am a trying very hard to abstain and it has worked so far. The insomnia is the issue. I do noy want to take any medicaion that would potentially be addictive. I do take a herbal substance called Valarien but it does not semm to really help.I will NOT drink again, but the side effects of that convicton has made me curious, thus my writing to you. PS: I am also going through a lot of work stress and am fighting each day to be sober It has worked so far. I have no support. And a behavior analyst I have substitued workouts and my music(I play acoustic instumental guitar for the past 20 years) to substitute for any cravings I might have. Any additonal advise would be most helpful Kindly yours. Michael

Anyone needing a place to go for housing              Reply to this Comment
Just wanted to touch base about our new facility in the DFW area (Denton). This is truly the nicest transitional housing facility for alcoholics/addicts in North Texas, it provides a safe almost country like atmosphere while still in the heart of Denton, on the bus line, close to work, and next to 2 universities and 1 college. We still have several available beds for men returning to North Texas. We are a self pay organization, the cost is $700 per month ($175. per wk) for room and board. Each mans family or friends can give them the first months rent needed to enter our program but after that it is up to them to work and pay their own way. (We are plugged into a labor provider who can put anyone to work the very next day) Accountability starts here and I can promise that if each man give us 3 months and follows the clear-cut directions given to them, their life will never be the same. I am 20 years old, Diabetic, snapped my hip in a car accident. My boyfriend was driving. However, I have become an alcoholic. And I know I was so strong before the accident. I was in honors, straight A, beyond strong, my life was athletic. Now after not being able to run, I have turned into a drinking alcoholic young teenager. Please, anybody who is young, I would love to talk!

Shell's Comment              Reply to this Comment
Shell, I am all to familiar with turning to the bottle when other things in my life are not right. You are young, but as with me I started drinking alcoholicly around your age. Let me tell you personally it DOES NOT get better to drink more over time. If you can quit now, PLEASE do. I am a member of a 12 step group for about a year and a half now so if you have any questions or just want to talk about it, let me know. I am here to help you and others like myself not go through what I had to go through.

I'm a drunk              Reply to this Comment
I went through rehab in 2002 at Camp Pendleton and did a good really good for two years. Then I snapped, I was recently hospitalized for withdrawal (accompanied by life threaten seizures). I stayed in the hospital for 26 days, but the second I got out I started drinking again. It had gotten to the point where I told a good friend and my wife and asked them to take me back to the hospital. The withdrawal was not bad, but this time I asked the doctor to put me on disulfiram. The problem I'm facing is being retired from the Navy; there really is no other treatment for me (I live in a foreign country). I will start with AA meetings again and am asking my treating physician to refer me to at least one-one counseling with the mental health clinic. ANYONE have any other suggestions?

alcohol rehab and employment              Reply to this Comment
Does anyone know if there are any laws whether a person in alcohol rehab cannot be fired (in the state of Connecticut)?

Needs work...              Reply to this Comment
Although the article was written to allow a brief overview of the issue, I believe this was poorly done. After reading over the article several times I found the writer mentioned the phrase "binge drinking" to often, as we the reader realized in the first paragraph to what he was referring, in conjunction with the miss-spelled words and grammatically incorrect sentences. Perhaps the writer should consider hiring an editor?
