The term self-help therapy conjures up a number of scenarios, some of which are accurate and others that are not. While the term appears to apply to therapy that will help only you, the user, most self-help therapy involves groups of people who talk, share, experience, and hope together, with the desired outcome being healing for those in the group or the solving of a common problem.
Alcoholics Anonymous could probably be deemed the first self-help therapy group, controlled by the members themselves, and has been the model for many such groups that followed.

In this era, however, when nearly every family boasts a home computer or two, self-help therapy has taken on a new dimension.

Online self-help has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 5 years, with groups available that address issues from grief counseling to motivation to weight management and everything in between.

While mental health professionals prefer to call these groups “mutual aid organizations,” they note that probably about 8 to 10 million Americans participate in some sort of self-help therapy each week, many of them via the internet.

There are a number of advantages to online therapy.  Most site the 24-hour-a-day availability of such groups, especially advantageous to those who work unusual schedules and are hard-pressed to find face-to-face groups that fit their needs.  Anonymity also plays a huge role in the success of online self-help therapy.  Many individuals prefer not to identify themselves to others, and in an online group, this is easily accomplished.  There’s no threat of embarrassment or other stumbling blocks that may keep someone from participating in traditional self-help groups.

For those who are unable to leave their homes due to illness, lack of transportation, or any other reason, this is the perfect way to join in to receive support and empowerment by others who may be facing similar situations.

Some traditional therapists, however, tout the dangers of online self-help therapy, citing unhealthy addiction to the internet and the presence of “lurkers”, who may be preying on unsuspecting self-help therapy participants.

Dear Ashley, I understand how you feel about your great grandmother. When my grandmother died it was like losing the last female link to my family as my mother had died six years before. I was very close to my grandmother as we had hoidays with her when I was young and she lived with us after her husband died and my mum went back to full time work. I'm probably not the one to help you with your boyfriend's problem as I don't personally know anyone who has been in jail. I have always had a fear though of going to jail for something I didn't do, which sounds exactly like what has happened with your boyfriend. Stick by him if he truly is innocent. However he needs to learn who his real friends are and double check the company he is keeping so he can trust those around him and so that you can trust him. You are going through a lot for a 16 year old. Remember your life is just starting out and it won't always be like this. You don't say whether you have drug and alcohol problems. I mention this because this website is attached to substance abuse problems. If this is a factor try to calm down and not get caught up in negative thoughts. The problem with drugs and teenagers is that young people do not have enough experience of life and the way the world works to ride out the bad times and know that they will one day pass. You are seeking help so you can trust yourself to reach out when you need to. You could try contacting a GP,a local doctor,to give you a referral to a counsellor. A good counsellor will be on your side and will be there to support you and talk things through with you. If you don't like the counsellor go back to your local GP doctor and ask for a referral to a different counsellor. Try a different referring doctor if you can't get the help you need from the first GP. Shop around until you find the right person you feel comfortable with. Let's face it some doctors and counsellors have prejudices and pre set opinions just like everyone in the world. Find one that suits you and is not out to judge you. You will survive, you are strong and there are people out there who care and can help. Never give up

Depression?              Reply to this Comment
I was 17 when I had my daughter. I am now almost 20. I strive to be a perfect mother and have beat the odds by graduating school and living on my own for most of my daughters life. My childs father cheated on my many times while I was pregnant and then after. I took him back.. I have had a dream of our family working out and us being happy. He honestly can be a great guy.. I am still struggling with forgiving and forgetting our past. I am still so hurt and have no self confidence. I think I am co-dependent. Im so wrapped up in him. I have been a single mother.. but Im so afraid of doing it again. I love him. I just feel like my daughter should have us together. Im depressed. My mother left me 2 months after I had my daughter. So much has happened.. no one in the new town I live in likes me. I have no where to turn. I feel like my whole world got shook up.. im so lost. I need someone to talk to.
