Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric illnesses in society today and yet many suffer in silence. Stress related to specific life events tends to come and go with the cause but anxiety disorders color the daily life of sufferers on an ongoing basis.
There are several different kinds of anxiety disorders but all share this in common: fear and dread are present in excessive amounts and are unrelated to actual circumstances. This theme of unbearable and irrational fear haunts the lives of some 19 million adult Americans as well as several children.

The causes of the various forms of anxiety disorders are complex and varied consisting of a combination of factors that include genetics, personality, brain chemistry and particular, possibly traumatic, life events.

Research is ongoing into this serious mental and medical illness that affects so many worldwide and many treatments are currently available. Despite this the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) states that less than one third of those afflicted seek treatment. This means that millions suffer unbearable levels of anxiety unnecessarily.

Anxiety disorders are an umbrella term for at least nine known categories of mental illness. These include obsessive-compulsive disorder where individuals are obsessed with persistent, recurrent thoughts or obsessions, panic disorder associated with severe anxiety attacks and social anxiety disorders that lead individuals to withdraw from a society they believe judges and ridicules them.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder which affects many who have been exposed to traumatic events like war or natural disasters is also included in the category of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are currently treated using psychosocial treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, anxiety management and relaxation therapies. Some of the best results are gained when therapy is combined with certain drugs like serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta-blockers and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

do I suffer from anxiety??              Reply to this Comment
If anybody can help me with this it would be great. I can't seem to be able to be without a man. People that I work with say that i am pretty and outgoing and funny, but for some reason I can't find a good, good man and when one pays attention to me I stay with him no matter how bad he treats me. I am going crazy, because I feel I have a problem but I don't know what or how to fix it. somebody please help..

Every sinngle relationship I have ever been in has been marred by anxiety. Fear of rejection overwhelms me and dictates my every thought. I grow to hate myself after being told that I am too depressing to be around. I watch people that supposely love me turn away from me because they can not deal with my anxiety, so the end result is that I believe no one will love me or have the heart to stand by someone like me. The hardest part is watching people grow in distance away from you, because you seem to be what is known as normal. What is normal exactly?Perhaps, a labelfor the minority of people that seem to have control over their identity.
