Sufferers of this disorder are normally very functional when it
comes to everyday life.
They hold down jobs and can be very successful
in the workplace and society in general. Some may encounter problems
associated with their seductiveness such as jealousy or they may offend
someone with their actions. But for the most part, this personality
disorder is overlooked by society and the victim as well.
Symptoms of histrionic personality disorder:
- Excessive need for approval and reassurance.
- Dramatic displays of emotion.
- Over sensitivity to criticism.
- Seductive appearance or behavior.
- Great concern over physical appearance.
- Need for attention.
- Shallow, shifting emotional states.
- Easily influenced.
- Need instant gratification.
- Seeing more in relationships than there really is.
While the case of histrionic personality disorder is not known, many
professionals believe that a combination of genetics and childhood
events play a key role. The disorder seems to be more prevalent in
women, but skeptics dispute evidence that points to this with the fact
that forward behaviors are more acceptable in men, and so men may not
be diagnosed with this condition thus skewing the results.
People with histrionic personality disorder usually function normally
until a breakup occurs which they will take very seriously. This is
often the only time that they will seek medical attention and not for
the disorder itself but for the depression associated with the breakup.
If they are not diligent, it is very easy for medical professionals to
overlook this disorder and chalk up the symptoms to depression.
