WHY DO PEOPLE USE CRACK COCAINE?

Usually Cocaine is a highly addictive product. Addicted people can become psychologically and physically dependant upon it to the point where they cannot curb their yearnings.

It has been mentioned previously that, for people smoking crack, the drug traps the chemical dopamine in the spaces between nerve cells. For enjoyable activities like eating and having sex Dopamine is used to create the feelings of pleasure.

But in crack users, dopamine stimulates those cells, recreating a "high" -- an ecstatic feeling that lasts between five and 15 minutes. Soon the effect begins to wear off, giving the person a let-down feeling and depression. This results in an attempt to smoke more crack in order to feel all over.

Our brain responds to the dopamine overload of the crack high by destroying some of it or shutting down its receptors or making less of it. This results in a situation where after taking the drug for sometime, crack users become less sensitive to it and think that they must increase their intake of it to achieve the same sensations. Simultaneously, they cannot stop taking the drug since their brains are "rewired" -- they need it more actually to remain stable.
