Dimethyltryptamine or DMT is either extracted from plants or made synthetically in a lab. It is a psychedelic drug that produces very powerful hallucinogenic experiences. People have likened the feeling after snorting DMT to that of being launched out of a canon. Even with doses of between 0.
2 to 0.4 mg, the effects of DMT are felt.
Users report fanciful dreamscapes, visiting another world, overpowering forces which are scary, talking to alien entities, a totally altered identity and perception followed by an abrupt return to the baseline after about an hour or two. However some users find disturbing thoughts and feelings for several days after use.
Physiological effects include vertigo, hypertension, seizures, tachycardia, agitation, mydriasis, ataxia and nystagmus. If DMT is smoked then throat and lung irritation is caused by the harshness of the smoke. Impaired judgment may cause injury, violent behavior and even self-inflicted injury. There may also be depression, anxiety and paranoia. Some users also report unpredictable flashbacks and a trance like state after using DMT.
As a drug Dimethyltryptamine does not have the potential to be addictive or cause dependence. However there may be a period of tolerance after use of DMT.
An overdose can result in an elevated body temperature and dehydration. It can also cause heart failure, stroke and even death.
