In 1912 German chemist Anton Köllisch produced Ecstasy for the first time at
Darmstadt under the German pharmaceutical company Merck, who patented the drug on 24th December that year only. After 2 years they got the patent, and without even knowing the influence of his drug, Köllisch died is 1916. During that time Ecstasy did not get its well know reputation; instead it was applied as a transitional chemical used for producing a styptic, i.e.
a medicine to control blood loss from cuts. It took almost 50 years to record the first intake of Ecstasy.
The initial appearance of Ecstasy was in the beginning of 1970s, and then it gained reputation in some hip yuppie bars in the 80s in the
Dallas district, from where it spread to the gay dance nightclubs. It stretched from there to the rave clubs and then to majority culture. Ecstasy spread like wild fire amongst the young adults of high schools and universities due to the rapid growth of the underground rave culture in the 1990s. Alongside heroin, cocaine and marijuana Ecstasy also became one of the extensively used illicit drugs in the
U.S.
