Normally, the users smoke, inject or sniff heroin. It is very normal for the abuser to inject the drug upto four times daily. Maximum intensity is offered by using intravenous injections where euphoria is experienced as early as seven to eight seconds after the injection. On the other hand, euphoria is experienced after some time (after five to eight minutes) when intramuscular injection is used.
It takes about ten to fifteen minutes for euphoria to reach its peak when heroin is smoked or sniffed. It has been verified by NIDA that heroin is addictive regardless of the forms of administration.
It has been discovered that injecting heroin is the most common method of administration among those users who are looking out for treatment. Injection of heroin is increasing in many CEWG areas where as inhalation of the drug is on the fall. On the other hand, there are some groups (like white suburbanites in the Denver area) who believe that inhalation or smoking does not have much chances of causing addiction and as such they resort to smoking or inhalation.
A more varied group of users are being reported with the change in the pattern of heroin abuse. People, especially the new users, are more drawn to heroin due to the fall in its price and purity of the drug (for inhalation). As a result, those who are not interested in injecting opt for inhalation. The use of this drug is on a rise among the rich and wealthy.
