THE HISTORY OF METHYLENEDIOXYMETHAMPHETAMINE

A German chemist called Anton Köllisch at Darmstadt in the beginning of 1912 first produced Methylenedioxymethamphetamine. On The 24th December that year, a German pharmaceutical company called Merck filed a patent for methylenedioxymethamphetamine. This patent was granted two years after the application (in the year 1916) and in 1918, Köllisch passed away without knowing the consequence his invention would cause. During that period, this drug was patented as an intermediate chemical used in the production of a drug, which was used to stop bleeding from injuries (styptic).

It was not a drug in its own right at that time. After more than fifty years, it was reported that humans ingest methylenedioxymethamphetamine.

From time to time in the 1970s, methylenedioxymethamphetamine was available as a street drug. However in the 1980s, some stylish yuppie bars and then gay dance clubs reported the dominant use of such a drug. After this, methylenedioxymethamphetamine started to get in to raves and then in to the general public. The use of this drug rose considerably in the 1990s with the well acceptance of rave clubs. It became popular among the youngsters in high schools and universities. Very soon, it was among the top four names of the most extensively used illegal drugs in the United States. The other three being Heroin, marijuana and cocaine.
