The drug methylphenidate is available in tablet form for oral ingestion in 5, 10 and 20 mg water-soluble tablets. People who abuse this drug increase the effects similar to amphetamine.
They ground the tablets in to powder form and then dissolve in water for the purpose of injection or inhale the powder directly.
This drug is classified as a schedule II drug and as such it has high possibility of abuse by the users. Euphoria will be experienced when this drug is injected. Methylphenidate was banned in Sweden in the year 1968 when the abuse of this drug was found. In the United States, its prescription increased tremendously over the past ten years and nowadays it is being used as a recreational drug.
Reports gathered by the DEA points out that those who are prescribed methylphenidate may pass them over or sell them to their classmates who will then ground the tablets and then inhale the powder. Unreliable reports have been received by the DEA stating that college students use this drug to help them study particularly when they have to study all night long or for exams (apart from using it in parties).
In a study of students at a public liberal arts college discovered that half of the participants knew that other students use the drug for amusement, 16% of the participants use the drug themselves and almost 13% admitted that they snort the drug.
