THE HISTORY OF METHYLPHENIDATE
Methylphenidate was first produced in the year 1944 and during that period, it was ordinarily refereed to as MPH. In the year 1950, improvements were made to it and it was tested on human beings in the year 1954. Ciba Pharmaceutical Company started to make MPH available in the market for the treatment of narcolepsy, psychosis related with depression, constant exhaustion and to counterbalance the sedative effects of other drugs.
Until this 1960s, this drug was used to offset the symptoms of overdose of barbiturates.
Methylphenidate was offered in the market in combination with other items especially, vitamins, hormones and tonic of MPH. In 1960, it was marketed as Ritonic that was used to maintain strength and enhance the mood.
In the 1950s, studies were carried out on the healing properties of Methylphenidate and by the 1960s; attention was made on the healing of hyperkinetic syndrome, which is now known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD.
In the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, the Americans started to use Methylphenidate in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. However, in between the year 1991 and 1999 the sale of this drug rose to 500 percent in the U.S itself. A report issued by the United Nation stated that USA manufactures and consume about 85% of the world’s production of this drug.
