Procaine or novocaine (as it is generally called) is a drug, which is used during anesthesia to provide relief from pain. The dentists utilize it but it is mainly used to release the pain from intramuscular injection of penicillin.
Procaine is a drug, which is injected in to the body of a patient prior to as well as in between the surgery. Once the injection is injected, the area around the injected region will become numb and then a surgery can be performed.
There are certain after effects of procaine use, which are usually experienced before the patient leaves (the hospital) for home. You should tell you doctor immediately if you experience any of the side effects given below:
- Sleepiness, tiredness and faintness.

- Nervousness, restlessness and uneasiness.
- Vomiting or nausea.
- Rashes on the skin or itching of skin.
There are certain side effects, which normally do not need the attention of the doctors:
- Pain at the region where procaine was injected.
- Tingling or numbness on the mouth or face.
