THE HISTORY OF ROHYPNOL
One of the by-products of benzodiazepine is Flunitrazepam, which was previously sold with the name of Rohypnol in North America. The features of this drug include anxiolytic effect, tranquilizing effect and skeletal muscle depressant quality.
It was used as high sedative agent in hospitals in the 1970s when it was originally produced by Roche. In 1975 it was released in the profitable market of Europe and it was sold in other nations from the 1980s.
Initially Rohypnol was available is the doses of 1 mg, 2 mg and 5mg. but when the hazardous quality and the abusive use of the drug came into view, the 2 mg and 5 mg doses were withdrawn fro the commercial market, only the 1 mg dose was allowed to be sold.
Being derivative of benzodiazepines, the pharmacological consequences were similar to other benzodiazepines, which comprise of muscle repose, thwarting of convulsion, lessening of anxiety and sedation. The tranquilizing effect of Rohypnol beats diazepam seven to ten times in its power. The impact of this drug lingers for 4 to 6 hours and the dizziness starts after 15 -20 minutes of its oral intake. Sometimes it is also seen that the impact can lasts for more than 12 hours after taking it.
The Us Custom has made it a rule to make the passengers announce the possession of Rohypnol at the arrival to the country. The passenger may face charges on illegal ground or be deported or the drug might be seized, if he/she fails to produce authentic medical prescription.
