Manic or depressive symptoms are common among teenagers and children having bipolar disorders. While some children can have depression, some are prone to both manic and depressive symptoms. Generally there is a combination of highs and alternative lows.
Childhood and teenage years are usually the period when bipolar disorders commence.
But the disorders may eventually be diagnosed in adult life! Any individual can be affected by these disorders sans any particular history. If one or both the parents is/are sufferer(s) of the bipolar disorders, chances of their children developing it at an early period of life, increases. Greater risk for this kind of disorder is also linked with family history of alcohol or drug.
The symptoms of these disorders found in teenagers and children are:
They are extremely happy, angry, aggressive, agitated, very irritable or silly.
Some children grow impractical high self-esteem. For instance, your teenage son may feel that he has gained special powers like a superhero! He can grow in him an energy enabling him to manage sleepless nights without getting jaded! A teenager can become talkative: he may start talk very fast and tend to change his topics very frequently sans any interruption. These are all because of depression.
But, don’t worry. There are treatments for teenagers with bipolar disorder. Educating the sufferer and his/her family about the disorder, mood-stabilizing medications like valproic, lithium (which decreases severity of manic episodes), and psychotherapy all fall into the treatments for bipolar disorder.
