INFORMATION ABOUT ADD IN CHILDREN
As to the cause of ADD no conclusive evidence can be found; they can be physical, genetic or prenatal.
The child’s attention skill needs to be improved in such kind of disorder. To learn and succeed in school they should be taught to pay attention for stretches of time. Special training must be given to them to finish a project once they start it and to listen attentively with not much distraction to divert their attention.
Such kids are normally very impulsive. They answer or start their work without much prior thinking. A lot of supervision is required for this initially but eventually make them capable of controlling oneself.
Learning can be affected if hyper-activity is present. In such cases children must be made to slow down and take in minutely their surroundings and situation. “The Turtle Imagery Procedure” can be used as a helpful activity to make children proceed slowly instead of rushing into something. Hyperactivity can be controlled by making them watch themselves on videotapes, biofeedbacks, relaxation techniques, role-playing and modeling of appropriate behavior by adults.
ADD children normally do respond to reinforcement. But it is the duty of the parents and teachers alike to find out to what kind of reinforcement, would a particular student respond. According to that a reinforcement schedule can be prepared.
