For an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder patient what should be the counseling goals?
Firstly, it is necessary for the ADHD teen or the child to learn recognizing problems and problem solving techniques.
Secondly, the ADHD teens or children must learn how to look before they leap, and know how to practice more self-control, and become less impulsive. In the absence of effective internal controls, their natural tendencies towards impulsive actions would cause many a heartache to the person.
Thirdly, the ADHD teens or children must learn respecting others and their properties, besides respecting themselves as well as their own properties.
Fourthly, the ADHD teens or children must learn monitoring their way of thinking. Kids with AHD may have more of negative thoughts than normal. Teaching children to know their own thoughts, controlling them to be more on-task, and more positive can be opted for.
Fifthly, make the child facing the disorder must learn the necessary social skills. This may often include moral reasoning as well. This may be more vital than the social skills trainings only. Often we find sociopaths having outstanding interpersonal skills, but lacking in the necessary values and morals for guidance.
And finally, relaxation trainings and anger management trainings should be given to the child with the disorder, as per the requirements. Many other equally noble goals are there, though each of the above listed goals is important to be dealt with for appropriate therapy/ counseling.
