You, a loved one or even a friend could be grappling with it. Whoever it may be, in your life, one of the biggest problems you face could be alcoholism. Just like taking drugs or smoking, it can weigh you down. For the person affected it is potentially disastrous and can become even fatal.
The best way to tackle alcoholism is to be ready for the worst but never to give up hoping for the best.
The first thing for the alcoholic, or yourself, to do when confronting it, is to admit that alcoholism is a problem. As with any other addiction, until the addict acknowledges it, the problem does not exist. Is there a way you can decide if alcohol is indeed a problem with someone? Are they drinking excessively? Could the drinking be affecting their life, work and relationships with people around them in a negative way? Ask yourself if all this is true of someone close to you and you can be almost sure that a problem does exist. But by merely identifying the problem you do not come any closer to its solution. There must be a lot of give and take while battling alcoholism. One must always remember that only when people admit they have a problem can one help them find a way out.
This does not mean that there is no hope for the alcoholic. An alcoholic can get help with his problem at certain places. Of these AA or Alcoholics Anonymous is the most well-known. The organization has a successful and widely used method that not only cures alcohol addiction, but also helps those recovering from it. Many people continue to depend on the AA to help them live a better life, even after they stop drinking. There are several support groups and programs, linked with AA, to guide the family members of alcoholics. By attending these programs they learn how to help the person fighting alcoholism, especially since the state of being sober may feel strange and require getting used to.
Alcoholism is a disease, and one must never forget that. It may be sometimes difficult to sympathize with an alcoholic, but one must remember that a friend or loved one could someday die of the disease. When confronted with alcoholism, there is no reason to feel helpless as there are places you can turn to for immediate assistance. With the help of the internet one can connect with online support forums or one can attend a meeting of the nearest AA association. Go all out to fight and defeat alcoholism – don’t let it take over your life.
