Parents face the maximum challenges during the teen years of their child. The development of self esteem among the teenagers is a very complex thing to manage. Sometime they feel like dirt of the world and the other day they could be the future American President. Since the teenagers show dramatic reactions to almost all matters, these highs and lows of their self esteem is quite natural.
Reasons for developing Low Self Esteem
Though there are things that may not really matter to adults, these may cause their self esteem to fall. These may happen because of several ‘trivial’ reasons like breakup with girlfriend/boyfriend, acne or untoward comments made unintentionally by adults whom they idolize.
Encouragement
If you feel that the teen of your family has a self esteem that is going downward, you should encourage them as much as possible. Be very careful about this as they won’t like it if they know they are encouraged for nothing. So be sure to make realistic comments. Also you should not expect that they will help you to realize that your comments are affecting them in any way. Instead you should simply keep on offering your encouragement to them as often as possible.
Keep them engaged
Help them to experience new things and cheer them to participate in activities they are interested in or have succeeded in the past. If they can get a lot of positive results from the activities they are busy with, the level of their self esteem will increase and will always remain high.
