Drunk driving is a serious offense and the consequences of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are become quite severe. According to the state in which the offense is committed, DUI/DWI offenders can get off with just a warning, may lose their driver’s license, or might even serve time in prison.
In many states, DUI/DWI offenders are required to undergo therapy in order to overcome their addiction and eliminate future driving violations.  Therapy for these individuals usually comes in the form of some sort of substance abuse program.

For low to moderate abuse offenders, therapy may involve some sort of group counseling program, led either by a mental health/substance abuse professional or accomplished through participation in a self-help group such as Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous.  Usually, offenders will be assigned a particular number of hours or weeks during which participation in counseling is required, such as 20 hours in group sessions or six months in the self-help setting.

Many DUI/DWI offenders are asked to attend meetings or presentations sponsored by groups like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) or SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), where they may hear DUI/DWI horror stories from those who’ve lost friends or loved ones in accidents caused by people like themselves.

If offenders are deemed to be high-risk or have committed multiple offenses, they may be sent to residential or inpatient treatment programs, with failure to comply resulting in imprisonment.  Residential programs involve living in a 24-hour-a-day licensed treatment facility where the offender is subject to group and individual counseling and other services that will hopefully result in his living a drug- or alcohol-free life once the treatment is completed.

When imprisonment is court-mandated, therapy programs for DUI/DWI offenders are usually instituted within the confines of the prison and may take several different forms, including group and individual counseling.

I wonder what kind of "special" treatment one might get if he/she sought treatment at the "treatment for professionals" rehab center? Why should that be any different than help for the "poor"? Isn't that a form of discrimination?

My sister's Drinking              Reply to this Comment
My sister was recently arrested for DUI. In a way I was relieved. I knew her drinking was out of control and something drastic would have to happen before she would realize what she was doing. Unfortunately, her attitude since the arrest has been that she is not guilty. I am hoping that the court will remand her to a treatment program. Again, I fear she will go with the attitude that it does not apply ot her. Please tell me they have a way of waking up people.

After successful completion of this expensive treatment, how do you get the paperwork from ARC showing you completed Level ll Alcohol Classes; the DMV needs this info before they reinstate your driving privileges?

The person that got a dui needs to learn how to not get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohal. Maybe I'm a prude but personally I wouldn't even drive after I drank a glass of wine and then waited 2 hours. Just wouldn't take a chance. Let me contradict myself a little now because thats what I do. I am a scorpio and learned that the people with this zodiac sign often contradict themselves. Here it goes. I have older brothers that has had a few drinks and then get behind the wheel, because they just live around the corner, from the bar, and they did get dui's. So their point and probably yours was that the rules on the alchohal limit is to strict. Well thats just the way it is so you got to deal with this. It is not to hard to call a taxi, right? If you are drinking and driving way above the limit, then shame on you. You may kill some innocent family, if you do this.

the reason court mandated rehab is bogus is becaue rehab barely works as it is when the "offenders" join by their own volition. court mandating it is a complete waste of time, but no one cares because these cheap councelors need their jobs and the state needs to look like it cares (even though it doesnt) about "rehabing" offenders. forcing someone into AA and group therapy and all that other crap is failure waiting to happen. especially when no one listens to what the clients have to say and just hand out pre-prescribed notions of help in the form of taking your money to sit in a room and say "drinkings bad". this is the kind of crap that pushes moderate-to-occational drinkers over the edge. your not helping anyone. everyone likes to think they have the correct outlook on life. just because you believe it, too, doesnt make you special or right. your a waste of time space and money.
