Most women substance abusers are single mothers that have also experienced trauma because of abuse. Often their situation prevents them from seeking treatment because they have nowhere for their children to go. For this reason treatment centers have started providing a place for their patients children to stay while undergoing treatment. However currently, only a small number of substance abuse centers provide childcare or residential beds for clients children.

Only 4% provide beds, and 8% provide childcare.
By providing this service treatment centers help parents focus solely on recovery, because they are no longer worrying about if their children are being taken care of. These treatment centers also have a tendency to have programs that also provide parenting education. Women who complete these programs show a higher success rate than other women. Experts believe that this is due to the fact that the program more specifically addresses their needs.  These treatment programs usually also provide training in job skills. This also helps reduce relapse because the parent feels more equipped to care for and provide for their family.

This area of substance abuse treatment is obviously successfully and many experts are pushing for more treatment centers that provide a place for children. It is also being suggested that substance abuse centers work more closely with the child welfare system. This is so that those working for the child welfare system can identify families that need help and refer them to the treatment centers. This will also help break the cycle of substance abuse because the children will see what the parent had to go through and will see the positive affects of being drug-free. It will also help reduce the number of children in the foster care system. Most states have a rule that a parent gives up parental rights to their children if the child is in foster care for 15 of the past 22 months. For many parents this causes problems because they may not have fully recovered in that time period, but remove themselves from treatment because they do not want to loose custody of their children.

My infant children are in a foster home that has committed to adopt them in 4 mo if I have not completed an in-pt rehab program for appox 30days. My problem is in funding. If I cannot come up with private pay then I can not go to rehab. Without my children I do not qualify for state assistance. HELP

My son and family              Reply to this Comment
I read your comment and was struck by the irony. My son and his girl friend who both need treatment and who had their baby girl taken and put into foster care are in the same boat. If he gets a job he loses health care and if does not get a job he has no money to live on or a way to support his family. Are there any programs that take families and treat them while giving them all a place to stay? I have no idea where to begin. They live in NJ and I live in Chicago.

    Funding              Reply to this Comment
There is funding without having dependants. My boyfriend got funding when he was laid off through PACE. There is one in Pontiac, Mi. Also there is I-ARC in Flint (not sure of spelling. Best bet is to search the gov pages in the phone book and start calling the substance abuse numbers. Good Luck There always is a way if you are desperate enough.
