Seniors/older adults therapy is a highly-specialized field and the
number of specialized therapists in this area is growing in order to
address the burgeoning needs of this group of citizens.
With
facts which point out that up to 28% of the senior population suffers
from mental health disorders, more and more therapists are setting
their goals on helping the geriatric members of society.
Therapy for seniors/older adults varies, of course, with the problem to
be addressed. All geriatric therapists, however, recognize some
common problems among the older adults. Depression is the most
serious disorder facing seniors, due largely to issues such as the loss
of a spouse or the inability to do things that were once normal every
day tasks, such as driving. As a matter of fact, the suicide rate
among older adults is higher than that of teens and young adults.
The onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can also be very scary for
older folks and counseling is often required to assist the afflicted in
coming to grips with what the future holds for them.
Seniors/older adults therapy will help this portion of the population
accept their lessening abilities and assist them in finding alternative
solutions and community-based programs to help combat their fears of
growing older and disabled, therefore improving the quality of life for
the client.
Home-based counseling services are often available for those who can’t
travel outside the home and transportation to seniors/older adults
therapy is often made available by many municipalities.
