For all of you trying to have hope, please find a book at your library by a Dr.Amen. He has been doing brain scans on people for the past 10-15 years and has found specific patterns of brain activity associated with different types of depression. Although the cost of treatment at one of his clinics is sky high, at least look at the info. The reason I say this is because there is a lot of evidence that depression and anxiety are biochemically based. In other words IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT! and also this means SOMEDAY, HOPEFULLY SOON, SCIENTISTS ARE GOING TO FIND EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS THAT WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC (EVEN THOSE WHO CAN'T PAY BIG BUCKS.) so, hold onto your self esteem, whatever is left of it, and do whatever it takes to find ways of coping with the symptoms until that time comes. do not give into suicidal urges or hopeless ways of thinking, or get caught int0 the downward spiral of drug addiction as a way of trying to self-treat the depression. Read whatever you can, get support from others who are not the type to blame, get exercise, etc. and try different medications if the first one doesn't work. Work with your doctor, and if your doctor doesn't work with you, look for a new one. there is so much new information coming out every day now on DNA that many of our current medical problems may be attacked from a totally new perspective. All in all, have HOPE. You are here on earth for a reason. You are not worthless no matter how crappy you may feel. good luck to everyone in making the best of their own situations. Thanks to all who have put your struggles into words and reached out for help and understanding. your courage is inspirational.

Dr. Amen's books              Reply to this Comment
Just read the post about Dr. Amen's books. They have changed my life and helped some of my family as well. The books are AMAZing! Healing the Hardware of the Soul and Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. He is nationally recognized and the brain scans are hard science evidence, not just someone's theory. Nice to see hard facts and finally understand some of the sports injuries and other trauma to the brain. His work also demonstrates the harsh effects of other brain imbalances, such as from other sources of trauma. Good luck everyone!

Wow.... a voice of sanity rises through the muck, that is this country's drug knowledge/treatment/policy. I am tired of reading about only drug "abuse" never drug "use"/drug "treatment" ... and getting detox help is near impossible because of all this confusion. I am now addicted to the back pain meds that 8 years of doctors, hospitals, clinics and specialists have all Rx'd for me.... I take full resposibility for my addiction/ dependency, I looked it up and I learned about the medicine before I took it, so I knew this day would come, I just didn't know that there's no safe, decent place to detox, once you are dependent or addicted to an opiate

The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem and you have done that, now ask for help. Good luck.

Book Title: A Childhood Taken Away by a Mother and Grandfather Author: Linda Sommer Farley ISBN: 1413775195 Linda Sommer Farley’s book tells us what life was like for her growing up. She shares with us the trauma of having an abusive mother with a gambling addiction and how it effected her throughout her life. Linda came from a large family, of eight children. She was the sixth of her siblings and she shares her memories of being solely responsible for her younger siblings when no one was at home. She also expresses her embarrassment of growing up poor, and the challenges she was faced through her school years due to her poverty. Linda also allows us to feel her pain, her fear, and her total loneliness, when her grandfather abused her. Linda Sommer Farley's reasons for her book are simply to reach out to others and to show them that they too can rise above it all and change their lives. Her book is inspirational as well as motivational. Linda Sommer Farley is a proven author and survivor. “A Childhood Taken Away" is available for purchase at: Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, TextbooksRus.com, Books Com, and Barnes & Noble Book Sellers.

Getting Clean/Staying Clean              Reply to this Comment
Hi, From my experience while working on my 5th. year clean and sober working with others helps more than anything else. Takes me out of myself (my own worst enemy) and keeps me busy. BUT, until someone has really "Had enough" their chances of making it are slim to none. Prayer works too. And if you don't have a God your more than welcome to borrow mine. He DOES answer prayers. I learned Last week that my psychiatrist of 8 years is leaving to take a job elsewhere. I want Indian Rivers Tuscaloosa to know I have never trusted a doctor, and felt he truly listened to me a depressed agoraphobic/anxiety disorder patient, like I have trusted Dr. Baltz. He helped me discover my strength for myself, and what a love for my children will inspire me to do. I truly am broken hearted to see him go, though I know he was overworked and spread thin at times, he always made time to listen. I hope more doctors learn to do just that, listen to your patients, we are not just a name and number. And we understand your days are full of faces with troubles. But just listen to us while we are with you and give us a word that God leads you to say to US. People, pray for your doctors and nurses. They are the angels God send to mend our broken hearts.
