The recently-introduced PROMETA is designed to target the biochemical imbalances in the brain caused by chronic abuse of alcohol, cocaine and methamphetamine. Said to “target the biology of the disease”, PROMETA may be used in all stages of the recovery process and can complement existing addiction treatments such as behavioral therapy.

"The majority of patients who completed treatment had immediate, dramatic gains in functional improvement, which, for clinical purposes, constituted remission of their disease," said Dr. Johnson. "The rest showed enough functional improvement soon after treatment with PROMETA, and continued to improve as they participated in group and individual therapy. These patients may have used alcohol or drugs once or twice without reverting to prior, dependent behavior. Many of these patients entered what would be described as early remission, but the improvement observed in both groups of patients can be considered clinically effective in quite an exceptional way."
The study shows that 48 out of 52 patients completed comprehensive treatment and that the results were quite promising. Dr. Johnson reported that 92% of patients given PROMETA, along with intensive outpatient therapy, entered remission from alcohol and stimulant dependencies.
Hythiam officials, of course, were delighted with the outcome. "We are pleased that a doctor using PROMETA in naturalistic, clinical treatment presented such positive treatment outcomes with our protocol. The rate of those achieving remission, or early remission is quite gratifying, especially when most of these patients said they had a history of failing in treatment," explained Terren S. Peizer, Hythiam Chairman and CEO.
