Substance abuse appears to contribute to a variety of harms; both for society and for the individual person. It is hardly a surprise that the increase of substance abuse treatment facilities is on the rise. With all the economic and social problems associated with substance abuse, treatment centers seem to be a good idea. Most treatment centers teach their clients how to be a contributing member of our society by changing their destructive behavior patterns.
Behavioral model of service in drug treatment
utilizes a framework from which the drug addict can possibly
understand. In the behavior model of drug treatment, the individuals
get to see a predisposition of behaviors that have been enabling them
to continue their destructive behavior. High resistance to this
self-efficiency has been shown to be associated with an increased use
of drugs. In this model, we see the need of self-efficiency as a
necessary component to break down the behaviors that they have used to
get and abuse more drugs.
Most drug addicts have character defects that must
be addressed while in the drug treatment center. Eventually, it occurs
to the addicts that if they open up and get honest, they might actually
stay clean. The selfishness begins to disappear, and the long-term
progress starts to take hold; the person has taken the first step in
recovery.
Treatment has a high turnover rate in how many
people actually are able to stay off drugs for any extended period.
This makes it important to try to get the person to change their
behaviors and get them to look at themselves. Sometimes it takes two or
three stays at a treatment center before the addict can get any
long-term recovery; but it does happen.
If the client can move away from blame and
look toward their own well being there is hope in staying off drugs
permanently. Another thins that is beneficial is giving the addict a
plan of action. It may be necessary for them to move to a new area of
town, or even to another state to get away from their old way of life.
In many cases, this can enhance their treatment progress.
Changing behaviors is what treatment should be
about. When choosing a treatment center, look for one that has a good
behavioral modification module in place and quality therapists that
will help the addicts help themselves.
