I have had bipolar disorder for the past 20 years; I like you, I thought I was going crazy!
However, your not crazy; there is an imbalance in our neuro biochemical sub-systems that are causing you your symptoms and mood swings. Although, with proper medication and cognitive-behavior therapy we be very helpful in being able to cope with your illness. It is a difficult illness to adjust to for both you and your spouse.
However, my suggestion is seek a well respected psychopharmaocologist who specializes in mood disorders.
Typically, this doctor may prescribe mood stabilizers depending on your mood and its severity.
usaully, they will give you a formal assestment, and treatment plan to resolve your bipolar condition. Please, understand that finding the right medication and at the right dose takes some time before your moods will stabilized. If you need someone to talk too; I can be reached at psychtech69@yahoo.com
take care
