Hi, I am an adult suffer of adult ADHD, I have been on every drug you can image, now they recently just put me on Ritilan. Which does seem to help the tasks aspects but has not helped much with the impulses and other things...I just recetnly had my psyhcitist of almost 3 yrs let me go, why i dont know. This has left me very upset and confused...I really thought she was different then the rest and truly wanted to help me, so it came to a big shock to me... Now I am forced to look yet again for another shrink and start this process all over again...I wanted to share my story because I dont thinkn these Dr's realize what an affect it has on the cleints they leave behind...

To Joanne: Your comments are too often true as many Psychiatrist are unaware of what this syndrome entails. I hope you can contact a Psychologist, or yes, a pediatritian who is well versed in this diagnosis and provides both individual and group therapy - a must! Prescrition drugs certainly help, but are only part of the resolution process. Try to find a similar organization to one in my area called ADD Resources. This is for adults vs CHADD for younger people. Best of success and fulfillment.

To Joannie- I am also an adult with ADHD, so I understand the common issues and feelings that come with it. If you have not already done so,I would encourage you to ask your Psychiatrist why he no longer is willing to work with you. It may not change his decision, but maybe would help you to understand and move on. I have just finished my degree in Counseling Psychology. In thinking about your situation, as a therapist, I know that I can only help a client that is also willing to work hard. ADHD is frustrating because medication can make a huge difference (it does for me)but it doewnt cure it. It still takes hard work, and learning tools to help us. And unless there is a miracle cure, this is how life will be for us. I have children that have ADD. 2 are young adults and one is younger. Over the years of working with them, because I love them and want to see them sucessful. Along with all of the help and encouragement that I have given them. I know that it is not going to do any good for me tell them that it will ever be easy having ADD. Life isnt fair! We have to accept that fact, and then try to help ourselves by learning how it challenges us, and what are some tools that we can use to help us out. Humor also helps! Sari Solden's book "Women with Attention Deficit Disorder is one book that I reccomend often. Hang in there! There are a lot of good resources out there!

ADHD,Obsesive-Compulsive, Oppositional conduct              Reply to this Comment
My 11 yrs kid has ADHD, Obsesive-Compulsive and Oppositional Conduct. He now is telling me that he wants to hit me and few things else. I have been going with him to psychiatrists and psychologists since he was 6 yrs. He doesn't want to do his school work; he doesn't want to do anything, only he wants to watch tv cartoons and play playstation games. I have tried everything but nothing works. He used Stratera and Metadate What can I do? I need urgent help. I live in Puerto Rico 787-267-1210. I need a professional that can help me. I am giving up!

I have a son in 7th grade. Has adhd and takes Metadate, just increased milligrams from 30 to 40. He attends an alternative school because he was expelled. The alternative school has caused depression and talked about killing himself. This boy was a funny, sociable boy with lots of friends. Now he is home all of the time, is getting in trouble at the new school. Uses lots of profanities when he gets angry. The school scores and promotes the students with the "point" system. Unfortunately he needs to be promoted by 2 more ranks to graduate from the program to be sent back to the traditional middle school and he may not make it. We just started with a new counselor which he really likes. I think that he may need antidepressants for awhile until he gets out of the school. Does anyone have any information about these alternative schools and how to deal with the administration for starters? I forgot to mention that it is run by the Ymca. Sad Mom

Dear Sad mom, My son had an anger and adhd problem in school. It started with a sip of wine that a girl brought in 7th grade. 7 girls and he took a sip of this wine cooler and he was the only one who got in trouble (with the law and everything). The girl who brought it had to write an appology letter to her parents! So ever since then he seems to act on impulse. He was put on Adderall and made it though school but they had EBD(emotional behavorial disorder) classes in the school. It took alot of patience and sadness and humiliation. BUT he graduated on time and was PROM KING at the prom! He was very populer in school and noone gave him a hard time. You really need to find out if he is being teased or experimenting with outside drugs. My son was and still is a social butterfly.Alot of Eddie Haskel in him.He is now 20 and is holding a good job, but his social butterfly days have been dampened by a crucial mistake, just when everything is going great he got a DWI!!!! Augh! It is a up and down ride with this boy or sorry, man.But all and all he is a real good hearted kid who just dosen't think before he does stupid things. He stopped the adderall after he and his twin sister graduated.Impulsive still. I am holding my breath that it is a maturity thing.I have 4 children he is the youngest,my older boy had a attention prob too.But he is know a married hard working man with three children and his own home in the country.Things like that make it all good.Your boy will just need some time and always keep track of his social life,it could get bad before it gets better.I got alot of gray hair from this single parenting life but hey I can dye my hair,I just can't get rid of the letting go of him and letting him grow.I could go on and on. So I hope I helped a little. Also there is a group called PACER that get the right help if the schools aren't willing to help> OK Stay strong MOM after all you are a woman!

No miracles, but this helped              Reply to this Comment
I have a 14 year old girl with ADHD. After years of Ritalin and Prozac, we switched her to Strattera 2 years ago. At the same time, we started Neurofeedback. The change in her has nothing short of miraculous. She will always march to her own drummer, but now she's at least aware and respecful of other people's drummers. The down side-insurance companies don't pay for neurofeedback and it is not cheap!

re: son's behavior              Reply to this Comment
Mam I have worked with the worse behaved kids in the Philadelphia school system. I haven't met a kid yet that I couldn't work with and eventually build a positive and productive relationship with. Your son needs to be convinced that he can enjoy all of those things that he likes to do, only after he does what you want him to do. He needs a strong stern influence in his life and you don't have much time left to correct this situation. And if you think its already bad, you aint seen nothin yet. rome_is_here@hotmail.com

ADHD Help              Reply to this Comment
My son has ADHD. He has been having trouble with wetting accidents. We have been to many doctors who diagnosed this as an overactive bladder. We have tried every medicine out there for this problem with no success. I have read that this problem can be associated with ADHD. Does anyone have any info that can help him get over this problem.

adhd              Reply to this Comment

ADHD Bed Wetting              Reply to this Comment
My son wet the bed for years and he is ADHD. We finally tried the Alarm, and it worked in one week. I was surprised after many visits to Drs. no one suggested it, and I found it on the internet.

ADHD              Reply to this Comment
I am surprised and hope this is not because they've tried every medication but couldn't help you. Did the doctor say why you were being let go?

ADHD              Reply to this Comment
Please continue to look for a talented therapist. Ask for referrals. I am sorry your therapist "let you go", this is not personal, but due to her own limitations, and unfortunate, given that you need support, not rejection/abandonment. I am sorry this was handled poorly, but please continue to seek help. There are people out there who care!
