DNA ALCOHOLIC EVALUATIONA              Reply to this Comment
What does the do, and can someone who is an alcoholic go through this eval and be undetected as an alcoholic? If the person is found to be an alcoholic what type of recommendation would be given to the courts concerning an alcoholic father having partial custody of a two year old child? A very concerned mom.

Alcohol Abuse              Reply to this Comment
I have a friend of over 4 years who is an alcoholic and inturn lost custody of her 5 year old. She is allowed phone calls and supervised visitation which she rarely takes advantage of. She has been to rehab before and relapsed. She even tried medication. She refuses to give up drinking. Rock bottom seems to have no limit. I can get past this..she has done her best to destroy everything in her entire life and continues to do so. I cannot help her no matter how hard I have tried. The thing that breaks my heart is her lack of relationship with her child. She is missing so much and every second is one that can't be replaced. She has lost her self respect and the respect of others, jobs, friends, her health and financial security...how can I help her from losing a relationship with her child?

Committing someone in MN?              Reply to this Comment
My mother is being very destructive to herself after my parents' recent divorce. She is an elderly woman who lives alone and is drinking, using illicit prescription drugs and is grossly underweight. She refuses to see her doctors anymore and has sequestered herself in her home. She's had several falls recently. And even though she says she wants to live I no longer believe her. Upon the advice of her psychiatrist, I've already called the police 2 weeks ago, but even that didn't seem to help. My siblings and I are losing patience, but are still very, very worried about her. Every time I go to see her I'm afraid I'm going to find her dead. My question is, can we have her committed for treatment against her will in Minnesota? We may even have to have her forcibly removed. Do people still do things like this in this day & age? Please help!

Mom's drinking too much...              Reply to this Comment
You can call the police and ask for a "Welfare Check". Explain that you feel that your Mom is in need of help. As for admitting herself, your dad needs to call a center and have her "Involuntary Commitment".

Hi Trina, My mom was and is the same way. We called the ambulance when she overdosed on SOMA she was out of it so long, she could not leave the hospital immediately. I have found Rehabs for her and she has been kicked out because of incooperation. However, just the other day we had a heart to heart talk and I told her how much her habit has impacted her relationship with her family and it is not the same. We do not want to be around her this way and this is not how we have remembered her. It appealed to her conscience and she admitted she needed help. We have been dealing with her substance abuse for the past 10-15 years and finally starting to see some light. I say, be patient, persistance and caring. Try not to get frustrated because these things take time. Talk to drug counselors who have had substance abuse problems in this area and get their input on how to handle your mom. It helps tremendously. Wishing the best of luck, Sam

re: elderly mother who's sick              Reply to this Comment
I think you may be responsible for your mother if she's elderly and if she can't take care of her self. State laws may vary on this. Why don't you call Catholic Charities - I think they have this organization in every state - at least they do in IL. They can assist you with setting up someone who'll come in to care for her, bring her meals, etc. If you don't have this organization, call Dept. of Human Services and explain your situation.
