    Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine, also known as Alternative medicine, Complementary medicine or Natural Healing,  is a system in which the whole person is looked at.  This includes an analysis of physical, nutritional, emotional, environmental, social, spiritual and lifestyle values.  Holistic medicine includes all forms of treatment and prevention including drugs and surgery if no alternatives exist.  Education of the patient in their own responsibilities for their well-being is an important aspect of Holistic medicine.

The goal is to achieve maximum well-being and health through proper care of the mind, body and spirit.  Some methods of Holistic Medicine are meditation, exercise, talking with others, a good diet (such as elimination of excess sugars and caffeine), use of natural herbs and treatments, and elimination of negative attitudes and stress.

One of the principles of Holistic medicine is that health is more than just not being sick.  Even if disease is not present, most people have a long way to go to achieve optimum health and can even hover on the line of being sick or not.  Lifestyle choices play a huge role in a persons health.

When a person does become ill, Holistic medicine seeks to aid the body’s natural healing system instead of curbing it with medications or treatments that are often meant to treat symptoms, not the core of the illness.  Symptoms are considered a message from the body that something needs attention.
Therefore symptoms are used to determine what the root of the problem is and how the whole body and the whole person can be helped.    Once a person realizes that the body is meant to take care of itself if they will just take care of it, a unique relationship is established.  This relationship is one that most people lack.  Body’s are fed and washed and occasionally get some exercise.  There is more to it than that.
