    Sleep Paralysis

    Sleep Paralysis

Have you ever woken up only to find yourself unable to move a muscle? This is not a case of having difficulty getting up in the morning. Sleep paralysis can happen when entering sleep (hypnagogic paralysis), or when waking (hypnopompic paralysis).

For the sake of clarity it is necessary to distinguish between two kinds of sleep paralysis. The one is normal and absolutely necessary and occurs during REM sleep in order to essentially disconnect the body from the dreaming mind so that it wont thrash about attempting to enact the rigors of dream-life and hurt itself doing so.

Dysfunctional sleep paralysis, sometimes known as "awareness during sleep paralysis", occurs when the mechanism that disconnects the brain from the body fails to reconnect upon awakening. The brain has left the REM state behind but the body paralysis persists.

Though this 'out of synch' stage may only last a very short time - normally no more than two minutes - it can seem much longer to the consciousness having the experience. Sleep paralysis, the inappropriate kind, is often associated with perceptual inaccuracies that can range from fleeting illusions to full blown hallucinations.

Studies show that hallucinations may range from the "full-blown", where the hallucinatory believes that the experience is 100% real and objective, to the pseudo which is still vivid but lacking the substantial quality of regular perceptual experience.

Most experiences of sleep paralysis fall into the pseudo-hallucinatory category where there is an almost ethereal quality that does little to detract from the powerful level of fear that typically accompanies the experience.

Statistics report that 20% to 40% of people report having had some or other version of sleep paralysis. For a third of them the experience is nothing more than a momentary fear of the possibility of paralysis followed by a swift return to normal. Because the experience may be barely noticeable, or simply ignored, it is considered entirely possible that everyone has experienced sleep paralysis in one form or another.

A substantial two thirds of those who report having experienced sleep paralysis describe episodes of hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations of varying degrees. In simple language the hallucinations are similar in nature, distinguished only by their association with those experienced at sleep onset and those upon waking.

Features of the hallucinations have often been postulated as an explanation for the proliferation of reports of alien abduction and demon visitation. The reason for this is the characteristic nature of the hallucination. There tends to be certain uniformly experienced features that include the "sense of a presence" that is felt to be malevolent in nature.

People who suffer from sleep paralysis often report the sense of there being someone in the room with them. They speak of a pressure or weight felt on the body, often in the vicinity of the chest area.

Hearing and seeing things will often accompany these hallucinations. Less common is the sense of floating out of the body and the tactile experience of being touched or grabbed.

A rare number of sufferers speak of a falling sensation or vibrations. Whatever the particular configuration of symptoms all report a vivid level of fear. This is shared by all, even those who, on some level, recognize that the experience is not altogether real.

This vivid and horrific experience of sleep paralysis is not culture specific. It affects people across the world and literature and mythology are full of references to it. In Canada it is called "a visit from the old hag", in Japan it is being "bound and fastened in metal". The Mexicans use a phrase that means " the dead getting on top" and in the southern United States it is known as "the witch riding your back".

Often associated with the serious disorder, narcolepsy, the occurrence of sleep paralysis is thought to be associated and exacerbated by sleeping in a supine position coupled with increased stress levels, disturbed sleep schedules and/or sudden changes in environment or lifestyle.

Studies show that sleep paralysis tends to be reported from an early age, around ten years old, peaking at 17 and then reducing markedly thereafter. Although the experience is a disturbing one and may even trigger a search for meaning that may include suppositions of alien abductions or demon possession the actual disorder is considered to be terrifying but benign.

People who suffer the condition on a regular basis sometimes form support groups where ways of coping are discussed and exchanged. The basis of this informal treatment is principally centered on ways of coping with the high levels of fear. Learning to relax, breathe and let the situation resolve itself are suggested along with a step by step physical exercise beginning with the extremities and working towards the core.

I have had cases of sleep paralysis for over a year. Minor cases occur about once a week, and major (meaning longer and Im more aware that I can't move) occur about once a month. A major case happened yesterday morning and I finally decided to research what was going on. It was then when I learned the name "sleep paralysis" and the first description I read about was having "connection to spirits" Every case I have had have seemed really normal, I don't feel like there is anyone else in the room. Last night, however, after all the reading I did about it I had a strange and disturbing dream: In the dream I woke up with paralysis but could see Images of my friends projecting in the air. They were normal images. I desperately tried to shake it and finally manages to get out of bed. Except one side of my face remained paralyzed and my vision was blurry. This occured about 3 times in my dream: me waking up, going out side my room each time to find a different scenerio, and then snapping back into bed and waking up with paralysis. The 4th time it occured I woke for real with no paralysis. I think the reason I had this dream was just cause I was thinking so much about articles and things people had written. One thing I did read was that sleep paralysis is associated with hynagogic hallucination Hypnagogia (also spelled hypnogogia) describes vivid dream-like auditory, visual, or tactile sensations, which are often accompanied by sleep paralysis and experienced when falling asleep or waking up.

Me myself has never had one of these dreams but some of my family back home has had many experiences of this. I heard its mostly when youre younger in age and happens because of misbehavior (being bad).Me and my older sister shared a room with bunk beds and she told me that she was pinned to the bed and saw shadows of animals on her wall.she claims that she tried to call my name and get up but nothing came out.I believe this is another case of sleep parlysis but my family back home believes this is a witch riding your back and a sign of (being bad).

I've been having sleep paralysis for about 2 years now off and on. at first they were extremelly frightening with all the hullucinations, but now i helps me in enducing lucid dreams. If you have them and dont like'em try not sleeping straight on your back, dont fight them it will win, close your eyes and try to go back to dreaming or wag your eyes back and forth left or right.

Wow, I just actually had an experience like that about 5 minutes ago, its really weird like I kept having this eerie feeling that something bad was going to happen and I could only associate it w/ a guy coming in my room w/ a gun to my head. and I am upstairs, but I worry about my mom who is downstairs, the funny thing is or actually scary is that I could hear HER breathing pattern ALL THE WAY UP HERE...how is that possible.

well i am only 14 years old and a while ago i had a dream. i was trying to get up because i was awake but my body wouldnt let me. i tried not to panic because i knew i would suffocate and die. i then had to focus totally and lifted myself up. i woke up in an upright position, possible in terror or shock or relief, i knew it was a dream however. then it happened for real this morning. the most frightening experience ever i thougth i was going to die from panic. i woke up naturallly and tried to get up but i couldnt. as before i tried not to panic as i would suffocate. i thought maybe it was because of my weight because i felt heavier so i lifted a finger. my finger would not move. i then was able to lift my small finger. i had to like command it to move with my mind because my body was literally dead for that moment. it was the closest to death ive been and im terrified. i know i sound stupid but it was so scary and i looked on the internet and saw all the horrible dreams and visions and hallucinations people have associated with sleep paralysis i really don't want it to happen again. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?!?

sleep paralysis for atheists              Reply to this Comment
for those in the "critical thinking" crowd, I can give some advice on how I addressed my own experiences with sleep paralysis. A few notes: the most notable cases I can remember were falling out of my top bunk bed as a kid in the morning because "my legs weren't working yet" and trying to fall asleep one night and noticing a sort of shadowy movement in front of my eyes. This one was especially interesting because while I was paralyzed, I had no interest in moving because I was mesmerized by the dancing shadowiness in front of my eyes. It was like I was curious. First I was a bit scared, but then I relaxed a bit and "thought critically" and supposed it could be my own eyelashes fluttering around during a REM cycle. I held on to this theory for what seemed like several minutes, simply watching the dancing in front of my eyes, right beside me on my bed. However, I was constantly looking for intuitive "evidence" that the experience could in fact NOT be my own eyelashes, and eventually, my pseudo-science hypothesis "betrayed" me, and rapidly things got scary, the shadows turned into dancing black legs, and then a *giant* daddy-long-legs crawled up and over my face. I simply could not believe it. I got up really fast and ran to my bathroom and turned on the light to see what it was. Interestingly (and I later kicked myself for this), I didn't just flip on my bedroom light because I didn't want to "scare it away", i.e., I wanted a good look at it. From my bathroom I saw it seemingly dancing on top of my floor lamp's lightbulb (the main light I figured I *should* have turned on). I then spent a good 20 minutes scurrying all around my room looking under every nook and cranny trying to find the spider to no avail. (I also got on AIM and had a long conversation with some internet friend explicitly detailing what happened, email me if you're curious: insomniac@trickyt.net) Now, some final analysis for the "curious"... Before the bunk bed incident when I was a kid, I secretly prided my ability to seemingly sleep on the top bunk and never even come CLOSE to falling off....until that incident, and then I felt very vulnerable and scared of falling out of bed. This fear lasted for several months or maybe a year or two (can't remember) until one time when I was sleeping, or trying really hard to be "asleep" because my dad wanted me to do some chore like dishes or mow the lawn or whatever. When he came to get me, I figured I was immune as long as I remained "asleep". However, he pulled on me a bit, and I fell out of the bunk (being wrapped in sheets/blanket, as well as falling into my dad broke my fall), but since I was still trying to keep up my "sleep act", I let myself fall as if "paralyzed". My back hit the wall and broke a big hole in the drywall! It didn't hurt much tho. Since it ended up being not so bad, it cured my fear! Same thing with spiders. Atypically unafraid of spiders before the "incident/dream", paranoid of their presence afterwards, until I crushed one two years later in front of my girlfriend and she scolded me for killing the poor spider! She then went on to lecture me on how spiders are *good* because they usually just eat all the other annoying bugs in your house. I was like...but what if it was poisonous?!? And she laughed at me for being so silly, and I kind of agreed. Spider fear cured ever since. Lastly, for those interested in psychology, this whole phenomenon smells like "shadow psychology", especially the idea that you confront your worst fears in your dreams, especially if you're trying desperately to avoid such fears in the real world (which would naturally be...well...stressful -- correlation?) Finally, what do I see as the solution? Embrace the phenomenon as "ok" and understand that it is a part of your SELF (albiet split off from your conscious mind as a your "shadow"). It is a part of you that desperately is trying to be "accepted" by your conscious mind, and has had to resort to visiting you in your dreams in order to get your attention. Love it. It's like your alter-ego, it will show you everything you truly dreaded might happen, but were too afraid to ask. If you accept it, it is a time to rejoice... kind of like springtime! You don't have to go to the mattresses (from movie "you've got mail") for another 6 weeks as you chase after your shadow like a silly groundhog. :) Anyway, hope this helps someone. If so, I'd love to hear your stories, so I can know what to "watch out for" in my sleep ;)

My Own Experiences              Reply to this Comment
The first time I had one of these experiences I was only 16 years old. I was sleeping in my bed one night and I awoke about 3am feeling my whole body pressed to my bed by this terrible weight. I was hot and sweaty. My arm was up beside my head so I tried knocking on my headboard to get my parents' attention but I couldn't move my hand. My eyes were barely able to open but I saw a big shadowy thing on top of me and it was breathing hot, damp breath on my face and neck. I tried to cry out, but my voice never came out of my throat. Whatever it was on my chest laughed a deep, evil laugh as I tried to fight it off. This lasted for about 5 minutes before I felt the weight slowly lift off of me. I flicked on my lamp and ran into my bathroom across the hall from my bedroom. I had to flip the switch to my bathroom like three times before the light would come on. I sat down on my toilet seat lid and stared into my room for two hours before my mom peeked around the corner at me. After I explained to her what had happened, she told me to 'stop being stupid and go back to bed'. The second time lasted about 3 minutes. I was sleeping on my side and I had my legs curled up to me and I awoke only able to move from the waist up. A girl about my age (who I think was a ghost)was standing at the foot of my bed and she slowly pulled my blanket off of me and my bed. I tried to hold onto it but I felt weak and the tug was strong. I eventually fell back asleep, but when I awoke in the morning my bedroom door was still locked and my blanket was still pulled off the foot of my bed. It was laying in a pile over by my window about five feet away... The third and (hopefully) last time it happened I was sleeping, lying flat on my stomach, and I felt like someone was sitting on the small of my back. I was raised up onto my elbows and I felt like my head was being pulled backwards. All of these times were very terrifying. One other time I just now remembered which wasn't scary, I was probably about 8 years old and I was spending the night with my grandmother at her apartment. I slept on her pull-out couch but I awoke about 4am lying on my stomach with my elbows propped up resting my head on the palms of my hands. My feet were swinging in the air above my back (think of how you used to watch TV when u were young). I was facing my granny's bedroom door sitting there just like that and she turned the light on and came out and said I had been talking to someone. Whether these things were paranormal or just my brain having fun with me I can't decide. I think the ones that TOTALLY doubt the paranormal theory have never had an experience themselves.

last night i thougt i was dreaming about having my chest and throat crushed by an invisible force. however, i became aware already awake. i was terrified, but i could not move, breathe or even move my face to shout out. i was not only scared by the paralysis, but there was a presence. i am not a religious person, but i strongly believe in the existence of spirits and beings beyond our conscious perception. i do not actively pursue a connection with them but i cant help but think that they were involved last night. im glad to see that other visitors to this site have had similar experiences, and that i am not going mad at the age of 16! please respond to this comment as i am far from understanding sleep paralysis and "night terrors".

it's something...              Reply to this Comment
The first time my eyes opened in the middle of the night and I felt completely unable to move, I was scared. In my attempts to wake up, I could only move my toes and the tips of my fingers. I had to make myself wake up by counting in my head, 1..2..3...wake up! This has happened to me so many times now I can't even begin to explain. However, when it was still new to me I told a friend about it who also had it happen to him a few times, but wierd thing about him was that he wasn't all shook up about it like I was. He casually stated that he hallucinated and saw figures walking by his bedroom door, and he made himself feel better by just reminding himself of how powerful the mind that it is obviously something he saw that wasnt real so no big deal. Well I, on the other hand, am a religious/spiritual person, and the slightest mention of seeing actual figures scared the shit out of me. I did research on it and found many articles about the "old had syndrome" and other things more closely related to that, or the scientific hypnogongic whatever. Well, like I said before It happends to me alot. One time there, infact, were people walking around my room. Shadowy black figures, two at the most were in my room. No joke, I nearly shat myself when the rest of my body woke up. Regaurdless of wether they were a creation of my mind or actual figures, I experienced it. And like I said before, this happends a lot to me. Sometimes It's harder to wake up, because as you start to feel like your coming out of the sleep you just keep getting sucked in. There's a need for actual strength to get out of it. For those who know what im talking about, I really don't know what to tell you besides the fact that you've got someone here who knows what it's like. if you read this, i appreciate it. thanks.

sleep disorder              Reply to this Comment
Hi. I read the article and all the postings. Obviously the medical community has to name this phenomenon something. Folks that are posting this is BS, I would like to know if you ever experienced it? If you haven't you can't tell these folks that they are dumb. I haven't had the experience for years but I did have it often about 10 years ago in my early 20's. For me, it would happen just as I was drifting off to sleep and I would feel as if something or somethings were pulling my spirit out of my body. I felt half in and half out of my body and I remember being terrified. Ok so the docs call it sleep paralysis, but the experience is unmistakable that there is more going on here. If you believe in God then you should also know that there are demons and other dimensions. I didn't see anything when it happened to me but it felt evil. If it is merely a disorder then I think everyone would have a different experience or different halucination. The fact that everyone is having the same sense of evil and terror reiterates that there is more too it. Now that is good reasoning. For me, it only went away when I prayed. I would just ask that before you post a nasty post that you are more thoughtful and compassionate regarding anothers terrorfying experience. If this has never happened to you then you really have no right to condemn or disprove what others are saying. I was very glad to find this blog and know that I am not the only one. God bless you and keep you.

i have had this wierd feeling come over me sometimes in the mornings like someone has laid an iron blanket over my body starting from my feet to the tip of my head. its strange because i am fully aware of what is going on around me and yet i still have no control over my body. this problem isnt consistent with me, it just started two days ago. this morning i woke up and tried to fall back asleep again and thats when the first episode happened. a soon as i snapped out of it i put my middle finger in the air. i didnt know what it would do but i just wanted to tell what ever was in the room to suck it. then right after i laid my head down it happend for a second time. after that i just decided to stay awake but for an hour after that i felt like i was still in a dream like trance.

I was home by myself because my husband was at work. I had awakened about 3:30 and didn't go back to sleep til after 5:00. I went to sleep on my stomach with my arms spread out. I "awakened" and couldn't move. As I struggled to move, I remember praying and asking for the help of the Lord to move and to remove this from me. Immediately, I realized that I was not awake and it was a dream. I was no longer afraid and was able to move my arms. For those of you who think that God isn't able, just keep trying to fight it without Him.
