How Do I pay for a Drug Rehab

    Drug rehab: Overview

Drug abuse is one of the major concerns in the United States and other countries. Drug rehab programs are crucial for drug abuse victims, to educate them about the facts about chemical dependency and help them make important changes in their lives to lead a drug free lifestyle. Drug rehab typically involves counseling and behavioral therapy coupled with group therapy, lectures and group discussions, to help victims cope with their addiction. Success rate of drug rehab programs are pretty high and most drug rehab patients are able to attain and maintain prolonged abstinence from drugs.

The cognitive behavioral and relapse prevention is one of the most popular treatments used in drug rehab programs. During these programs, health professionals insist on avoiding all those situations that can lead to drug abuse again. For this purpose, patients are taught important drug refusal skills that can help them achieve abstinence.  In order to benefit from a drug rehab program, it is crucial that victims are willing to incorporate new ideas into their lives and change the way they think about themselves and the society.

Paying for your drug rehab program

Most drug abuse victims often come to the rehab center only when their addiction ruins everything good they ever had in their lives. This includes broken relationships and jobs. Without any money in the pocket and with practically nil support from your friends and family, it can be extremely difficult to pay for your drug rehab program. However, there are rehab centers that offer faith based treatment to all those individuals who lack the means to pay for their treatment but, have the will to overcome their addiction and lead a normal life. This kind of treatment can be charged on the basis of your income or is offered absolutely free if you are unable to pay. Since addiction not only ruins the victim but also affects the society at large, it is crucial to offer these kinds of treatments to individuals to help them overcome their addictive habits.

Many insurance companies offer considerable coverage for drug rehab programs and treatments to help individuals get rid of their addiction. In addition, the federal medical leave act allows individuals to take time off from work and enroll for a drug rehab program. However, employers are generally not required to pay during this period. Your decision to go to drug rehab will be your first major step on your path to recovery. Besides, this decision will also help you win the trust of your family and friends. You would be surprised to see the kind of support they can give you both financially and emotionally, to help you overcome this deadly addiction. Once a patient decides to go to a drug rehab, usually family members personally go and register them for a suitable program to ensure that the money is being used for the right cause.

Health Insurance for paying for your rehab program

A large number of insurance companies these days cover all or part of the costs pertaining to your drug abuse treatment. While choosing a health insurance company, it is crucial to understand the "covered services". Having health insurance coverage can be a great financial relief when paying for your costly substance abuse treatments and drug rehab programs. Various forms of health insurance coverage include private health insurance, Medicaid/CHIP, military health care and Medicare that assist substance abuse victims to take care of their treatments.

Graph indicating the types of health insurance coverage used in the year 2004-2005 by individuals aged 18 years and above.

    Non Profit drug rehab centers

The drug rehab center need not be expensive and what matters most is the kind of medical and psychological help they provide to victims to deal with their addiction. If you invest some time in good research, you are sure to find a rehab center that best suits your needs, without leaving a hole in your pocket. Good and reliable non-profit rehab centers will be the best choice if you do not have the funds to take care of costly treatment plans. Since government and religious organizations usually sponsor these centers, they are not in the moneymaking business. At such centers, helping victims combat their addiction with compassion is the main objective.

State’s contribution for substance abuse treatments

As per the California Drug and Alcohol Treatment Assessment (CALDATA), every $1 invested in substance abuse treatment promises a return of $7 in cost savings pertaining to crime control, lower health costs and loss of productivity. Since many insurers do not offer coverage for these kinds of treatments, there is a large gap between the number of people who receive treatment and the number of people who want treatment. To bridge this gap, state and local governments are forced to provide financial assistance for such treatments,

The federal government makes a major contribution to treatment costs through Medicaid, the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant. The state government makes a significant contribution for this cause through various plans such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP).

how to help              Reply to this Comment
for all you parents writing on here, u can't really help until your childrem want it. i'm a former user and my parents paid for rehab and i relapse cuz i wasn't ready to quit, you have to let them hit rock bottom, and they have to really want it... you have to cut them off no matter how much it may kill you to, other wise they will never know what it truly feels like to be alone. if you don't already know go check about co dependency or atten alanon, or naranon, for friends and family of a user.. its your version of aa or na

My brother has been struggling with a heroin addiction for about 4 years now. He has lost everything in his life, including his kids. I know that he has hit rock bottom and I am sure he knows he has hit rock bottom but none of us know when it will be "too late." He had no insurance anymore and theres no way I or my family can afford rehab. What are some options or where can we turn? Any advice?

Drug and alcohol abuse              Reply to this Comment
My spouse is an alcoholic and it has recently come to my attention that he abuses cocaine as well. He was also diagnosed as being bipolar. My husband is self employed and we purchase our own insurance. We have aetna and it does not cover any drug treatment programs. We have looked at upgrading and we have been unable to find ANY individual health plans in the state of pennsylvania that offer any drug and alcohol coverage or mental health coverage. My husband makes way too much to qualify for any type of public assistance. He has been going to AA for about a year and 1/2, has a sponser and is in therapy and none of it has worked. He has recently been put on lithium and we are hoping that it will work. I am really at the end of my rope and do not know what to do. I am in Al anon and therapy myself. That has helped somewhat. Does anyone know of any type of rehab could help us in the Philadelphia area for people that are not destitute, have insurance w/ no mental health/ alcoholand drug rehab coverage and don't have $30,000 in the bank to hand over to a rehab.

    Husband              Reply to this Comment
Dana, I am going through something very similar right now. Have you looked in to al anon? This will help you. You need help yourself and protect your kids first. You can't help your husband unless he wants to get help....even then it is tough. You are not going to be able to save him. You need to concentrate on getting/ keeping yourself on tract emotionally and finacially. This doesn't mean that you are abandoning him. This would actually be the best thing for him. best of luck with everything.

Marshmans Act              Reply to this Comment
Look into the Marshman Act. Once you fill it out, and you can download it on line, try tp present it to the judge. Hopefully they will send him to rehab instead of jail. I am having a similiar problem with my son and this is what I was told to do. I spoke with a lawyer who gave me this info free of charge because I also do not have money to send my son to rehab. My son is 27 and not in jail yet but I sometimes think that might help him. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
