    Definitions of Treatment Services
Mix of mental health and substance abuse services- A study done in 2002 found that there were five million adults who had a serious mental illness, and had substance abuse problems. Almost 30 percent of all adults with serious mental health illnesses also use drugs. Other statistics show that 53 percent of substance abusers also have at least one mental illness.
Payment assistance- The growing costs of mental health care are staggering. Statistics show that a large portion of mentally ill individuals who need help aren’t getting it due to the costs involved with therapy or counseling. For that reason, many never even step foot into a hospital, mental health clinic, or therapist’s office, even though there are a number of options available for payment and payment assistance.
Residential beds for clients children- Most women substance abusers are single mothers that have also experienced trauma because of abuse. Often their situation prevents them from seeking treatment because they have nowhere for their children to go. For this reason treatment centers have started providing a place for their patients children to stay while undergoing treatment. However currently, only a small number of substance abuse centers provide childcare or residential beds for clients children. Only 4% provide beds, and 8% provide childcare.
Residential long-term treatment (more than 30 days)- Choosing the proper treatment program for substance abusers can be a daunting task. With so many programs from which to choose, the addicted individual and their family turn to professionals and other resources for suggestions in regards to the proper treatment.
Substance abuse treatment- Substance abuse treatment is often individualized to each patient, but there are a few steps that each patient needs to take to become drug free. The first of these steps in recognizing the problem. Denial used to be mistakenly believed to be part of the drug addiction symptoms, but recent research is showing it is not. People trying to help a person accept that they have a substance abuse problem need to show empathy, and respect.
Women- Substance abuse among women is different than in men, and most often has multiple contributing factors, such as poverty, psychosocial, mental health, history of abuse and trauma, and involvement in abusive relationships. Because of these numerous factors that need to be addressed to help a woman become drug free, substance abuse centers specifically for women are becoming more prevalent, and existing substance abuse centers are changing their treatment approaches to better help women get rid of their addictions.

Volunteer Work              Reply to this Comment
The lack of vision in most agencies that provide social services aid of any kind, is a lack of programs to deal with skillful people willing to do volunteer work. The other big problem is absence of well trained staff to answer the phone when those interested call to seek information. I have spent months for an institution to offer my experience as a teacher/plant propagation, green areas maintenance expert without any luck. Even communicating with callous staff has been impossible. For example and the worst:SALVATION ARMY, La Fondita de Jesus, Arzobispado de San Juan and many others.

La Fondita de Jesus              Reply to this Comment
I tried to offer my time to do volunteer work to this agency. I called three times, sent my resume and the director never demonstrated any courtesy, interest in answering my calls or letter of interest. I believe this is the rule in Puerto Rico.

Most agencies looking for volunteer workers are lacking professional staff to direct provide information, make referrals skillfully for those willing to do something for nothing. Indifference is the rule, Peninsula de Cantera, Elzaburu School are the most recent failed attempts.

Callousness and Indifference              Reply to this Comment
It is amazing the difficulties of doing volunteer work in the batataraian isle of Puerto Rico. Apparently, since no one knows what he/she is doing in the agencies mentioned, when looking at one's resume they freak out, leaving a blanket of silence, permanently. Self Help Private/Public Agencies              Reply to this Comment
It has become a fashion from this type of agencies to write proposals to get federal and local funds to create programs of the environmental, ecological band wagon. However, some, involved in propagation and landscape maintenance practices do not even know the difference between a shade/sun plant and/or the names of what should be planted. When one calls the attention to them in this regard, they who are making $25,000.00 at least in their silly good for nothing jobs respond: "That is why we need volunteers". Believe or not!
